Gran Bahia Principe Jamaica
Travel Blogs from Runaway Bay
The first of hopefully many relaxing days in resort! Got up at a reasonable time and strolled down to a breakfast of continental pastries while Sven had the old fry up, Jamaican style! We had our meeting with the first choice rep this morning at 9 so we went and listened to Godfrey, our rep, talk about the island and what's good to do! Then we …
We left McMurray on the Air Canada red eye flight to Toronto. After a few hours in the airport and a snack at where else but Tim's we boarded our plane to Montego Bay. We were put onto buses there and off on about an hour drive along the north coast to our hotel the Gran Bahai Principe at Runaway Bay. Air Canada vacations had us already checked in …

Our itinerary while in Jamaica, December 26-30, 2009:
Saturday, December 26:
- Flew from Atlanta to Miami to Montego Bay
- Took the Jamaican Tour bus from the airport to our hotel. Cost $40 for a 1 1/2 hour drive with one stop at a road-side bar to use the restroom and purchase a Red Stripe beer for the road
- Arrived at our …
... a few photos. Then we got out and lounged on the beach til about 1:30 when we went for lunch. We both had Jerk Chicken and chips at the Piscis beach bar. We got another roll for the fish and went to the east beach. We swam and fed the fish again, and when we ran out of bread we swam around seeing what new fish we could find. It was very productive! We saw a HUGE fish (compared with what we had seen so far), swimming about and ...

Here is the ... I think objective ... info. We have just returned from GBP on Dec 31, 2006. What to expect ? It depends on your preferences, but definitely do not expect too much. I would say we were lucky, even though we got initially, upon arrival, a very bad room with construction smell and dust, no functional toilet and no hot water, and there was no electricity for lights, but AC was ok. It took us from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. to get another room where we actually could sleep, there was no hot water, but the toilet was functioning, AC was working. At that time we already did not care about drinks in our empty fridge, towels, etc. I hardly made my wife to go to that room to sleep till next day. We actually kept two rooms for ourselves that night, to be able to get towels, soap and get shower with cold water from one room and sleep in the other room. Next day we spent time for two meetings with the management and Air Transat representatives. Anyway, to make long story short, the management and Air Transat representatives have tried to resolve all complaints, as a result we received a choice of having another room in the GBP or go to another hotel. I did not want to go anywhere except Riu Ocho Rios, but it was not possible, therefore, I insisted on the new room that would make my stay comfortable. To my surprise and LUCK by the 6:00 p.m. we finally got the gorgeous room - beachfront with working toilet and HOT WATER. This room was quite clean and functional. Of cause, we took everything: towels, soap from the room we slept that night. It still took them about 2 next days to make the room completed as to fill the fridge with drinks, get us two additional pillows, remote from TV, soap, and final touches to our room accessories. But unfortunately we never get our closet to be finished, there was no hangers bar and the closet itself has not been cleaned, therefore, our things stayed in our suitcases. Once again we were in luck to get that room with beach front view, I know personally one family they were not that lucky and stayed whole week with the leaking toilet which was never fixed even they complained everyday, another family stayed with AC not functioning, but they actually did not complain. The safe was not quite functioning as well, there is a combination that most of personal knows, and even you program your own pin number to open/close the safe it will be opened with this special combination. I do not want to distribute this combination, but be aware. The rest was fine with me, the food was ok, I am not that picky about food, the restaurants were not that great, but again I would not expect too much from them, and again I am not that picky. Beach was ok, one is just in front of the resort, very small and there are a lot of rocks in the water, so be careful, another beach is much better, with mostly sand, but the construction is going on right beside this beach. Some water activity is available, maybe not to the that extent you would expect. I do not think there was scuba diving, but I think it was mentioned in the brochure.
Worse than terrible
Arrived on Dec 21 to room that shower didnt work, ac broken, checked out beach, rocky not sandy. They ran out of the following -(beleive it or not) shower towels, face clothes, bath robes, beer, ice, glasses, plates. No help from hotel staff or tour operator when we complained. 180 insect bites on my Daughters legs, we saw rats and mice, cockroaches in room. After 4 days we made our own arrangements to leave. this resort has a long way to go before its ready for tourist occupancy.
I stayed at the Golden Club Gran Bahia from Dec. 21 to Dec. 25. We were suppose to stay until the 31st but were so unpleased with the resort that we moved on Christmas Day to Beaches Sandy Bay. The resort really does look beautiful and it could be great but at this point they are clearly not ready to open.
I stayed at this hotel from December 23-30, 2006 and it was a complete disaster. The hotel was not operational in any which way. To begin with, most of the rooms lacked functional air-conditioning and hot water. There were leaks in our rooms due to water mains that broker. This problem also created an issue with mosquitos. We had numerous mosquitos in our room and the hotel management's solution was to give us bug spray that they then ran out of and we were told to go buy our own at the market. We also had problems with our room safe as well as the fridge which was disconnected and empty for 3 days despite our repeated requests to connect it and fill it.
This hotel has opened about two months too soon; it is not yet ready to accept patrons.
