Historical Traveler Reviews Colony Bay Resort Punta Cana

Colony Bay Resort a big disappointment

We visited Colony Bay from Feb. 8 to Feb. 15th. We were promised the resort was complete except for the Mini Golf and Conference Room. When we arrived we found that was totally untrue. There were many things unfinished. There was no phone system at the resort. You could call out from cell phones provided at the front desk but no one could contact the hotel in case of an emergency. No contact between room as no phones. We had no blankets or bedspreads upon arrival, only a sheet. We were told to use towels for blankets at our Sunquest orientation the next day. The rooms are a 2*, not a 4 1/2*. The lighting is horrible, no peep holes or security chains on the doors to prevent staff from walking in when you are there. No phones to call to report issues, had to walk to front desk to report and get things fixed. No clocks in room and no phones for wake up calls. Air conditioning did not work more than half our week. No hot water for showers 4 of the 7 days. No air or hot water is unacceptable.

Casino not up and running, nor was the gym for our first 3 days. Gym under construction the remainder of our visit but you could use it after sawdust was cleaned up daily. Jacuzzi not working as clogged with sand. Foot showers at beach to wash off sand were roughed in but not installed. Pool full of sand. Filters not filtering properly. Water seeping from pool into pool bar having to shut down the swim up bar a couple of days. Wiring in room not proper, very dangerous. One a la carte restaurant called the Steak House and you get a set meal, you cannot order from a menu. You also cannot get steak. We were told when we made reservations there was no steak. The lunch and dinner buffets were very good. The house wine was also very good. The staff at the resort were very nice and did their best with what they had to work with. Sunquest rep. not very accommodating. We felt abandonded by her.

In six months or so when things are complete at the resort (hopefully) this may be a very nice place to visit. It is not right now. I was extremely disappointed in the resort. I would not book there yet.

Not even remotely a 4 star hotel!!!

There are problems with all new hotels...I totally understand that but when you rely on the tour operator to be upfront and honest about the property prepare yourself for disappointment.

The beach is not white sand, the ocean is rough and has a lot of rocks. The pool is average and do watch for broken glass on both the beach and the pool. Do not allow your children to swim in their kid's pool unless you would like to catch Hep A or B....stagnant waters scare me.

The food is okay...but one needs to know what you are eating...signs would be helpful. The hotel advertizes queen beds...hardly a double. The rooms are tasteless and are more in line with a low class chain like Motel 6 or similiar. At least with Holiday Inn you know what you are getting.

But on the good side the people are wonderful, however be very leary of Ramon selling the doon buggies...they are not worth the money and Danny who would probably scam his own mother. Leach and untrustworthy!!!! And I'm being very nice about him.

In a few months this hotel will be better but will never be a 4 star. Never!

Toda gioia..toda beleza...

Got Lucky

We stayed Feb. 4 - 11 and had a great time. We got lucky and were upgraded to a suite, at check -in, as most rooms were not ready or not in proper working order. Ours was simply gorgeous and everything worked perfectly. Others I understand had some legitimate complaints and I'm sure even the resort would probably say that they opened a bit early. I will say that they were making progress every day and I am sure since we left that many more of the issues were taken care of. Having stayed at 5 stars all over the area and in the Caribean in general, I would say that this will probably only ever amount to a solid 4 star. The food was excellent in the buffet areas and the staff tried hard to make up for the other inconveniences. You will undoubtedly see a lot of negative comments in the next short while but as long as you keep an mind that it is brand new I'm sure you will have a wonderful vacation. The pool was lovely, the beach was better than Dreams and although the waves were up, the ocean water was warm and safe to go in. For the money it will be a good resort in the future.

It was okay

we went to the colony bay feb2..i just checked their web site to see if they claim they have a white beach and they say that they first disappointment was that they did not.we did have a few problems with our 3 rooms no point mentioning them because they are things that happen when your are the first person to stay in that room.i have not been to the bigger resorts but i thought it was nice for a smaller son had to use dreams gym to work out because colony bay was not ready.we departed from the resort on feb9 and the eqiupment was just being set up.

they have only 1 ala carte res steak house went only once you cant compare to the steak we have in cdn, keep a open mind

food overall was good

lots of booze

pizza res was good

i perfer the overall look over dreams except their pool was huge but we spent our time at the beach .this place will be a good 4 star when every thing is completed.

Colony Bay Catastrophe

This will be as short as I can make it, but there were so many problems.

To begin with the rooms are not as seen in the travel magazines. The beds are doubles and not queens. There are not enough bed linens for the whole resort, so some guests had beach towels to cover up with. The rooms are very simple and not up to par with a 5 star hotel.

There was no hot water in our room for the first 5 days, the shower head was broken and the bath tub drain never worked.

There were no telephones, tv, air conditioning or electricity throughout our stay (if it was fixed one day, it would not function the next).

The food was ok- to- good at the 2 buffets. There is only one "à la carte" but they serve one platter of beef and sausage, there are no choices. There are no other restaurants on site. There is a pizzeria, but this is not anything more than a snack hut.

The beach was beautiful, but there was construction going on so there were pieces of glass and nails in the sand.

This hotel was not ready to be opened to guests, there is still quite a bit of work to be done at this resort, but I believe it will never reach a 5 star category.

... beloved wasn't meant to live on an island and we were both shaken.

It didn't stop us from enjoying ourselves (although the hummingbird-sized cockroach by our cottage door almost did), but reminded me that it's best to take it slow with a travel-newbie. One day we'll laugh about Dave puking in the turtle pond, thus giving the little snappers the buffet of a lifetime, but even now (March 2015) it's a sore subject. On our next adventure together, we'll be better prepared.

... I know something is going to cost me.... Home again, home again, clippity clop! Back to the room to change and lay in the sun! Oh, no electricity! Another norm in the Caribbean ! Call the desk to report it. Of course several hours later when we come back from the beach, still no electricity, took showers in the dark, only so much to do in a dark room!,,, ok, down to the lobby it is... I was dying for a coffee. The food is ok here. Ate at the beach buffet for lunch, Patrick and I ...
