... de Boigne who made a fortune in the East Indies (no idea how he made this fortune!) and then spent a lot of it on the town. Each of the elephants looks real, and you get the feeling that real elephants are strolling out of arches into the middle of the street! Apparently the fountain is known by the locals colloquially as Les Quatre Sans Culs 'the four without *****' (translation into English by some stranger)! We wanted to hire bikes and ride to a lake a little way out of town, ...

The eastern side of the lake was even better. ... hour traffic. Now, imagine doing this for 4:30 at a time except for stoping for refuelling or a coffee break. But instead of riding at 110km/h you are riding at 130/140 constantly overtaking column of trucks and being overtaken by those drivers in a hurry. Add a bit of rain to top it up and then you will understand why I get a bit tired at the end of the day.

      ... time.

We have been in remote country for the last few days. Haven't seen a store, and rarely even a house since we left Les Contamines.

Our last refuge in France was de Mottets, quite a relief after the night before. Although it had been converted from a dairy farm, it had spacious, modern rest rooms, hot showers, semi-private bed room (Barbara only had to share with 3 guys this time).

Actually our roomates were very interesting: ...
