El Batey Sosua, Dominican Republic, 809-571-3535
Today I was so excited about starting our vacation that I woke up at 4:30am and then couldn't get back to sleep for a few hours. Fortunately there is air conditioning in the room, but it's already starting to make me sick (sore throat, etc.) so I need to figure out how to keep it low enough to keep it cool enough inside but not make us sick. We got up at 7:30am and went to the buffet breakfast. There was lots to choose from - all different sorts of dishes, and they had delicious hashbrowns th...
Sosua, Dominican Republic alisoncoleToday Leanna and I got a really late start to our day, due to the fact that we were too tired to get out of bed! Knowing that I was wasting a beautiful sunny day away, I finally forced myself to roll out of bed around 10:15am and get into the shower. By the time we were ready to start our day, it was about 11:30am, so we had missed breakfast, and lunch didn't start until 12:30. Everyone was down at the beach though so we decided to walk around the resort a bit first and then go and meet them,...
Sosua, Dominican Republic alisoncoleThis morning I woke up with a bit more of a sore throat and the "sniffles" than I had on the second day we were here. It's from the air conditioning in the room, which I'm trying to keep to a minimum but it's still getting to me. Leanna, who I'm sharing a bed with, says she isn't feeling sick at all, so I think it's just because I'm lying right underneath the vent on the wall where the cold air comes out of. Lynette told me too this morning that she also has the same thing. Leanna and I were ...
Sosua, Dominican Republic alisoncole[note: this was actually written on Jan. 6th] Saturday, January 5th was fairly unmomentous and so I didn't bother writing yesterday - plus I was feeling too sick (head cold) to bring myself to the computer at the end of the day. Leanna and I, again, could barely get out of bed in the morning. I was feeling ill - no sore throat anymore, but just a cold, going to my head (I have stopped using the A/C at night so at least it's not progressing). We got up after 10am. Our dad had already gone out ...
Sosua, Dominican Republic alisoncoleToday was our last day here in this rainy/sunny tropical paradise. I wasn't looking forward to going back to our rainy, snowy, cold Canada and wanted to make the most of the day, with the hope of some co-operation from the weather. Today it seemed like the storm was finally over. It only rained once in the morning, and then after that started to get dry and a bit sunny again! I got up early-ish, around 9am, and was well-rested from the early night the day before. My dad had already gone out f...

... was just beautiful, and I had a comfortable seat by myself, and sat next to the window and took many pictures. We drove through the city of Santiago, which was sooooo beautiful and CLEAN! It is much nicer than Santo Domingo, and it is surrounded by mountains...Santiago is the most modern city in the country, besides Santo Domingo, and has excellent medical services available.
Once I arrived in the capital, I had a quick taxi ride to the bus ...
... somewhat explains the blank stares when I asked for frijoles), and within minutes of asking the Comedor lady about Emma (a.k.a. la gringa que cuida a los perros), we were on a motoconcho heading to her house. Surprise!!
I felt bad dropping in on her unannounced, but it was great to see her. We knew we were at the right house when five dogs bounded out to greet us. Emma arrived in Cabrera more than two years ago with virtually no Spanish, but ...
... were shocked - shocked! - that the terrace-level rooms were $15 for the two of us. The rooms are basic and the terrace isn't well-maintained, but we walked out of our room to a wide expanse of ocean and a little beach off to the side. Really, the hotel made my week.
As soon as we checked in we headed back out for Playa Grande, supposedly one of the prettiest beaches in the area. It's hard to know how ...

changed me, and has offered me a new perspective on what is really important in
life. Sometimes I wonder if the past two years of struggling through this
doctoral program has been worth it. So many sacrifices on the part of my
family. Time away from Ellie--
I know that when she gets older, I will tell her about the kind, selfless people
who live in a different part of the world. I hope that, if anything, this
