Historical Traveler Reviews Caribe Club Princess Beach Resort & Spa Punta Cana
We just arrived home from the Hodlepa Caribe Club. We arrived on Feb 4 2003 and had an awesome time! We brought our 2 kids age 6 and 8, so we upgraded to the Caribe Suite--well worth the money. They are very clean and large. The maids came twice a day to make sure that we had enough towels, water, pepsi, and 7-up. NO face clothes though--bring your own! The grounds were beautiful and VERY clean! The Buffet was great with a large variety of different things--from Roast Turkey one night to roast beef another. There was also a pasta bar that was VERY good! The beach bar and grill had hamburgs, awesome hotdogs, pizza and pasta that you could get and bring to your chairs at the beach or the pool. Nobody in my family had any health problems and needed imodium--although some friends of our had MAJOR problems LOL. There are 3 large pools, my favoutite was the one with the swim-up bar! They are all very clean! The ocean was awesome! The kids had a blast riding the waves--which were quite high at times--and boogie boarding. It is VERY safe beacause there is NO under-tow, which I was a little concerned about for the kids sake. The beach is awesome too--You can walk for miles and NOT be bothered by the locals until you get to the flee-markets. They are VERY aggressive there! If you want to get your hair braided--DON'T do it on the resort! They wanted $70us to do mine--walk up the beach to the left just before the point. There is a lady there between 2 huts that sell lots of stuff--she only charged me $25us. And just a little warning--it took me 3.5 hours to take my braids out! We didn't go on any of the tours because they are VERY expensive--although I was told that the Outback Safari and the Coral Reef tours were WELL worth the $80us pp.If all you want to do is lounge around and relax--then THIS is the resort for you! This is a GREAT place to bring your kids to as it is VERY safe and there are LOTS of kids splashing around in the ocean or in the 3 pools. All in all, we had a FABULOUS time and we are planning to return next Feb for 2 weeks. HOLA HAPPY!
Very clean and safe resort
We stayed at the Hodelpa Tropicale for one week the end of January with our 6 kids, ranging from 10 years old to 19 years old. The youngest ones had a great time, played on the beach and swam in the beautiful ocean alot. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to do for the older ones and they found themselves bored after only 3 days. The disco was a joke and the nightlife was a bit dissapointing. We spent alot of time in the lobby, which was beautiful and relaxing at night. THey had live entertainment most nights. The resort was very clean and we all felt very safe. There were plenty of bars everywhere and the pools were very clean and not too busy. However, if you wanted a chair by the pool or on the beach you had to get up at 6:30 to put your towels on them. If you are looking to take a side trip take lots of money with you, since most trips were $80 US a day/person. We took the Bavaria run and found it too expensive for what we got. The food was good and there was plenty of it. There were a lot of Germans and other European families and very few of the staff spoke any English at all. Service at the bars wasn't quick, but who's in a big hurry?? All in all, we had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to go back to Punta Cana!
We loved the club
my girlfriend and i loved the club. very clean, well organized, friendly staff. highly recommended. food was good.
Worth the trip....
My husband, 9 year old son and I spent 2 weeks at Hodelpa Caribe and overall enjoyed our visit there.
The resort is large, clean and well maintained. The rooms were great; nice and big and very clean. We only had some issue with late in the day cleaning of the room (4pm +), but once we addressed this with the front desk it got much better. The mini bar only gets restocked on request....but mostly you are not in your room so it really is not that big of a deal.
The watersports were sufficient and the staff at watersports etc. were all pretty decent. I found that if I spoke German rather than English I would have had better service all the way around....but oh well.
We picked this club for a couple of reasons, with the main one being the kids/teen club for my son. He never went.....it was nothing worth going for at his age. Mainly some small children and 90% German speaking with the focus being mainly for the Germans. The Teens club..ha ha...no teen I know would have enjoyed this.....one pool table with missing balls. One Soccer table with broken parts etc. Didn't interest him nor many of the other children near his age.
The lobby has a pool table and that kept most of the kids entertained.....
The food was above average overall. Often the same food variety, but with enough to choose from. When there was a decent cut of meat to serve or a fish dish that looked appealing (paella) they were very skimpy.....rice, no fish...you have to be aggressive to get what you want. Speaking of aggressive....while at the Buffet you have to make your way through with some aggressiveness otherwise the mass population will elbow you out of the way. I don't mean to sound bad, but the rudeness of the majority of guests in this resort was unbelievable......mainly Europeans at this resort. Having said that; we come from European families as well.....but we were brought up much better than some of the guest travelling to Hodelpa.
The bar staff....as mentioned by others...if you are young, single and female...you will be served quickly and served WELL. All others.....bring your patience!!
The Al a Carte restaurants....very, very slow. Mostly good food....but slow. El Pescador (?) seafood restaurant was great.....and no where near as slow as those you are not required to pay additional for.
Get up early and stake your spot if you are looking for a lounge chair(s) on the beach.....the earlier the better. Leave your towel....everything left is usually safely left. Same goes with staking your claim near the pool.
Overall a beautiful destination and resort. Food was average to good. If rest is what you are looking for....you will find it here.
We still prefer Cuba for service and friendliness....but Punta Cana is a beautiful destination for sure.
We would be happy to give you some tips if you are interested in going here......you will enjoy...just keep your expectations realistic given the location.
Nice hotel but...
The Hodelpa was very nice, clean and well-planned. I particularly liked the pool being close to the beach and in fact everything was close, once you were at the hotel as opposed to the reception area. What was not good about the Hodelpa was the animation -- the animators were lacking in something maybe charm?. Also, although the food was varied and plentiful, the lack of a grill, like at lunch time or dinner, with, for example, fresh fish was disappointing. The food was buffet style and therefore lacked a certain freshness.
The night time entertainment was generally poor and in one case, pathetic (the so-called comedy show). There were too few activities geared for adolescents -- who generally had nothing to do.
One other thing I found a bit disappointing but certainly it was a plus from a child's perspective was the ocean -- there were alot of waves, not the pristine clear carribean waters one would expect.
My wife, two kids and I arrived at the Caribe Club on Christmas day after being turned down at the next door Paradisus (notwithstanding our fully confirmed reservation). Without any obligation, the Hodelpa's manager went out of his way to find us a room for our whole stay, even though the hotel was also fully booked. We had a fantastic time at the Caribe Club. The hotel is very clean, the grounds, installations and beach are all beautiful, the food is varied and good, all sports were included (my son and I could have windsurfs ready at any time), and the staff was extremely friendly. All of that at unbeatable prices. We are very glad things turned out that way and will definitely go back to this wonderful hotel.
Some useful information
My friend and I just got back yesterday and we had a great vacation. I want to say that the resort is beautiful, the activities are terrific, and the beach is spectacular.
However, I wanted to share a few useful tidbits for people considering staying here.
First off, this is not a great place for single people, particularly women. This resort is mainly geared towards couples and families, so keep this in mind before booking. If your goal is to relax, this is a great place to do so. There is one disco that plays mostly latin music requiring a partner. So, If you're looking for a "party", you won't find it here.
If you are a single woman, be aware that the male staff at the hotel are quite aggressive, particularly the Activity Staff. While I at no time felt threatened by any of them, I did feel uncomfortable at times. They will hit on you, so know this before you get there.
Something that we were also not aware of is that this resort is actually comprised of 2 hotels, the Hodelpa Tropical and the Hodelpa Carribe. The Tropical is slightly less expensive, but for all intents and purposes, it is the same; people staying in either enjoy all of the same priviledges and amenities, except for the number of restaurants you can eat at (2 for Hodelpa, 5 for Carribe.) However, I got the distinct impression that, since it is slightly cheaper at the Tropical, we were treated with slightly less regard. For instance, our room did not get cleaned until around 4:00 pm (sometimes later) and more than once we did not get towels and had to call to request them. This despite leaving tips every day, along with some small gifts. If we had known this ahead of time, we would have paid a bit more and booked the Carribe.
One last thing to note is that this is a hotspot for Europeans, not North Americans. There were a fair number of Canadians but the majority of guests were from Germany and France. Additionally, many of the Canadians were from Quebec. This in in no way a bad thing, rather it is just something to note as I was taken by surprise by the small number of English speaking guests.
All in all though, this is a great resort that I would highly recommend to couples and families with small children. It's a beautiful place with friendly people and great food (and plenty of it!)
We had a great time and have the tans to prove it.
Adios, and Bon Vayage.
We`re back from a great holiday
We just returned from a great holiday at the hodelpa caribe club. It was full of fun, adventure and relaxation. the people were very friendly and always singing and dancing, we found the resort to be very clean and it had plenty of excellent food and activities to choose from. It is located on a beautiful beach, and there was plenty of launge chairs available everyday. The grounds and gardens were so beautiful and well kept. We are are going back to this resort again and we highly recommend it to everyone.
It was the best
This place was mad hot it was a beautiful place and a very nice place to fall in love with the man of of your dreams
Just returned from a great holiday in Punta Cana
Punta Cana is very beautiful place to visit. The beaches are beautiful but wavy. As it is for the Hodelpa you get your money worth.
The rooms are clean, big and modern. The food is good, a little repeative. The service is fine but at times a little slow, the same applies to other resorts in the DR concerning the service (I assume it's the heat).
There is 5 specialty restaurants, 24 hour snack bar, buffet and Disco. Drinks are available 24 hours a day.
Two huge pools and 1 kid pool. Three jacuzzis. All very clean.
Overall a great 4 star resort I recommend to any one and we regret only staying for 1 week.

... in tip top shape. (See attached pics). The beaches were in pristine condition and the water felt like bath water. Not San Diego cold at all.
