Loved Beaches Resort
We stayed at Beaches 01/28/03 to 02/04/03. The grounds were beautiful, the service impeccable. The staff catered to you hand and foot. Our 2 children vacationed with us, ages 3 and 1. We used the kids camp during the afternoon and I can't say enough about the women that worked in there with the kids. They were totally attentive to all of the children, had many activities set up for them to keep them busy. My children loved the resort and loved when it was time for camp. The only downfall to the resort was the resteraunt selection. There were only 3 to choose from at night that you could bring the children to, 2 of them totally overcooked the food on a regular basis. The Mill ended up being our main dining experiance. It was a large buffet style resteraunt. After eating there at least twice a day, it got a little old. Other than that I highly recommend Beaches Negril to all, it really was a wonderful place to stay.
Happy with Beaches Negril
My husband, our 15-month-old daughter, and I just returned from a weeklong stay at Beaches Negril. Overall, we were extremely satisfied and very impressed with this resort. Here is a breakdown:
Check-in: I've read many complaints regarding the check-in process; however, we had absolutely no problems. It took us less than 10 minutes to fill out the paperwork and be escorted to our room. To be fair, there was one day when the check-in area was rather crowded with several exhausted, frustrated-looking people. I have an inkling that maybe their check-in didn't go quite as smoothly as ours.
Restaurants: We found the restaurants to be okay. We ate 2 nights at the Teppan Yaki (Japanese cusine) and thought it was excellent the first time, not quite as good the second. The first night, our chef (who cooks the food right at the table) was extremely personable, funny, friendly, and interacive. The food was also excellent. The second time we went, although we had the same chef, he barely spoke to anyone at the table. He seemed to be in a bad mood or something. Also, the scallops that night were really fishy. If we hadn't gone back the second night to this restaurant, I would have had nothing but rave reviews for it. The second night left a bad taste in my mouth, though (no pun intended!!).
The Mexican restaurant was decent, but you need to take into considerationu that you are eating Mexican food Jamaican style. For example, the salsa was more like ketchup with tabasco sauce in it. The service was excellent. Overall, I'd give it a 7 out of 10.
The buffet was quite a disappointment, although i'm not one for buffets to begin with. It seemed like the same food every night.
The snack bar by the pool served excellent burgers and jerk. Lunch was probably the most consistently good meal at the resort. We never ate at the Seveille, but we heard rave reviews. Note: Men must wear long pants at that restaurant! (I forgot to pack any for my husband)
Kids Camp: This was outstanding. The Jamaican women are wonderful with babies, and the older kids really seemed to bond with the young jamaican men that usually took them to the beach to play. I never heard anyone say anything negative about any aspect of the kids camp. Actually, many parents felt they weren't seeing enough of their kids because they wanted to spend all of their time in camp!
Other: The beach, pool, and resort in general were nothing but beautiful. Everything was lush and well kept. The drinks were delicious, if you want 'em strong, just say so! The only beer they have is Red Stripe, which didn't make my husband too happy.
One thing we really noticed was how happy the resort employees seemed to be to have us there. Employees always greeted us with a smile and seemed to make it their mission to make sure everyone was happy. The staff was extremely accomodating and went out of their way to be sure we were enjoying ourselves.
Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions!
We spent the first full week of the new year (2003) at Beaches in Negril and overall were extremely satisfied. The reviews we had read ranged from GREAT to Poor Service and Watered-down drinks. We found the service to be wonderful and the drinks all top shelf and "3-fingered" - far from watered down. Great beach and water - saw starfish on the last day there and pleasant and clean grounds. We went with 2 teenagers - a 19 year old boy and 18 year old girl - and they pretty much entertained the whole week. Their major complaints? The pool tables and equipment need upgraded and the Game Room needs additional game controllers. The bars carded them even though they are legal in Jamaica and the nightime disco was a big hit with them. There were 2 other familes who had check-in problems like we did - rooms were not ready but the folks at Reception wnet out of their way to try and make us comfortable. The sales office arranged a birthday cake and song one of the nights and were great with the followup. Highly recommend the Seville Restaurant and for couples, take a cab to Sandals ($5/person roundtrip) and eat at the Sundowner. Our summary - GO FOR IT!! Airport in Montego Bay went well and the van ride to and from the hotel took about 75 minutes and was comfortable. One more thing - if you go to Negril take some basic school supplies with you and give Gail at the Negril Tree House a call - she is trying to help a local public school as best she can.
Concierge Level is a Must
Went 1/2/03 for 6 nights. 2 adults and a 23 month old. Very family oriented. Lots of activities. Recommend that you try and go at a suite concierge level if you can b/c it is a much better room, with better service. Check in was very slow with poor communication. One couple in the same waiting area had been waiting for a room for over 2.5 hours and one was leaving b/c the rooms they had requested were not available. Apparently check-in can be a big problem. We were greeted and seated in a nice area but then no one got back to us for 45 minutes, and we did have the supposed concierge level where you are not supposed to wait to check-in. The check out service using air jamaica at the hotel is a big plus! Three of the 5 restaurants are open only for dinner, and one is adult only, so you leave never wanting to see a buffet again! Overall though fun, clean, lots of activities, and a decent value for the price.
Vacationed over thanksgiving week 2002 2 adults and 2 children 4 and 8 yrs old. We were very disappointed. Got a room right next to swept away resort which was a nightmare. Room was suppose to be an upgrade as a return guest( we vacationed at turks and caicos november 2001) but turned out to be a big mistake. The room had a king size bed and pull out sofa which was unacceptable in my opinion and smelled VERY musty. Each night at 9:00 p.m. the music began at swept away and lasted to 12:00 p.m. The music was so loud you thought you were in the stands. The manager at Beaches was not very interested in the problem. There was nowhere to move do to the hotel being booked that week. The room was terrible. It had no storage for any clothes and the bathroom was very moldy and unkept. It did have a balcony and you could see the beach but the problems outweighed the beach location. Given we spent 5,000 dollars to vacation here we just couldn't believe the disappointment.
The weather was nice but as usual the beach was windy on two days so water sports could not happen. There always seemed to be a delay with every activity. The snorkeling was not so hot and the bannana boat rides and water skiing only happened if the boat was in service. The water trampoline was broken so that just lied on the beach as a big eyesore. The food was terrible and the lines to the bars were disgraceful. Only redstripe beer if you are a beer lover and every day the slush machine ran out of mix for frozen drinks. Grounds were unkept, not what we had hoped. Don't bother going here you will be disappointed if your use to nice places.
Beaches Negril......best beach in Negril
Beaches Negril boasts the best section of the 7 mile beach. I mean it, jetskied the entire length of the beach and it was the best part.
All the water sports you could want, and nice large swimming pools, and hot tubs.
The staff was wonderful....very nice and friendly.
My 2 year old needed special milk because of allergies. We wrote to them a week before we arrived advising of this situation and when we arrived our fridge was stocked with not only the rice milk, but her brand as well. Apparently, they had it brought from Montego Bay, as it was not available in Negril. Good Personal Touch.
Kids Kamp was wonderful! Our daughter did not want to spend any time with us. She had such a blast. Her happiness, in itself made this trip a success.
However, there were down sides to the resort itself. It was somewhat old, and although the grounds were beautiful and rooms were very neat and clean, this resort did not look like a 5 star resort as publicized by the travel agents.
And the supposed gourmet food was really not good. It was rather bland and boring. We were advised by the manager that they had been receiving complaints from american tourists that the food was too spicy. What could I say to that?
However, there was this one bar and grill next to the swimming pool called the "Last Stand". It had really good steaks, fajitas and excellent jerk cheeseburgers. So we ate at this grill the entire time.
Also, there were numerous bars around the resort. However, we found it quite difficult to get even the least bit tipsy because the drinks pina coladas and all contained too little liquor. We realized this on the second day and asked them to pour us triple shots of rum in the pina coladas. This took care of the problem. Some people will get somewhat put off by the presentation of the drinks, but remember, you are in a third world country, so somewhat suspect looking presentation should be taken as part of the charm of being in Jamaica.
Moreover, Beaches Negril is as good as it gets in Negril if you are travelling with kids. If you are not travelling with kids, stay at The Caves. As this is among the best resorts in the world.
We had a grand time, and had plenty of time to do all the things one might want there. In fact, we were done with Negril sooner than we anticipated, and decided to transfer to the Beaches property in Ocho Rios, Beaches Boscobel.
Also, you will get solicited to buy marijuana, don't get offended if you get asked. It is american tourists who demand these things, if there is anyone to get mad at, it is the visitors to Jamaica. The locals are simply providing a service that is requested by visitors. Say "No thanks Mon" and take it in good stride.
6 days in Jamaica, and I really understood how laid back life can really be, if you want to go on permanent vacation and don't have too much money......move to Jamaica......people are really laid back!
Next time I go we will travel without our baby, and will stay at The Caves in Negril.
Beaches Negril, Terrible
Beaches negril, lack of service, service, service.
For the money spent, a terrible place to spend your hard earned cash, I will never recommend the beaches or sandels resorts in jamaica to anyone.
Poor overall - resort, food, entertainment, drinks.
Service was non exsistant. If you have ever traveled anywhere and go to a beaches or sandels
resort, at least in Jamaica, you will be furious with the lack of service and money spent to stay.
Thumbs up for Beaches Negril!
Eight adults + six teenagers all enjoyed Beaches Negril for Thanksgiving week 2002. Nice rooms, fun staff + activities, plenty of good food, great beach, ocean & watersports!
We just recently returned from a week stay at Beaches Negril. We researched the Caribbean a great deal before finally deciding on Jamaica and Beaches Negril in particular. We had teens(2 15 year olds, a 17 and 18 year old) We were looking for lots of water activities, and all inclusive with plenty of food and drink. The kids parasailed and jet skied (which was additional), but could snorkel, water ski, banana boat, and scuba dive for free. They have aqua trikes and a water trampoline the kids loved. We all had a wonderful time. The rooms were great and the staff could not have been more friendly. The kids said it was the best trip we have ever taken! We tossed around the idea of Atlantis in the Bahamas but vetoed becasue it is not all inclusive. We also thought about revisiting Cancun but are so happy we decided on Negril. The Jamaicans are so friendly. We will definitely be making a return visit.
I just want to tell everyone (even if you are and adult) that Beaches Negril (allows children) is the best hotel to stay at in Jamaica. If you have young kids there is a kids camp and if you have teenagers there are daily activites and nightly activited with prizes that are awarded if you play them. The pool activites staff is EXCELLENT you get to know them very well and by name and belive me a week is not long enough!!!

It's been a couple of days since my last report but they have quite eventful. As I am determined to report the truth let me start by saying that whatever Lily claims is only part of the story. Got off the plane at Montego Bay. They drive on the left here, but I had a few drinks at the airport and enjoyed the drive. Our resort seems nice, but so far we've only seen the bar. But that is the second most important room! I've attached a picture of our room. Lily wants to be on top the whole week. We spent the evening at margaritaville good dancing but hip-hop and we wanted reggae or calypso. Maybe ...
