Feliz Halloween y mucho, mucho mas!

... over the place speaking their English, eating their sushi, dancing to their American rock´n´roll. Isn´t it terrible?!

Well, it is terrible if you only have a couple of precious weeks to get acquainted with Costa Rica. Fortunately for Jaime and I, we have oodles of time and what we were looking for were two fold: SUN and FUN for Halloween! We also didn´t want to backtrack by going back to Sta Teresa or down to Dominical. So, we packed up ...

Go Mama , ride the wave

... I was breathless just walking to the edge of the ocean carrying the surfboard on my head , noticed a lady having a relaxing ocean-front massage and thinking there may have been better ways for Aengus to spend his money on me. I am a teacher with quite a bit of patience but none in comparison to Julio, my instructor. I did manage to get up and catch some waves and even have some fun.
Tamarindo is an idyllic beach location but not ...

Costa Rica
I flew into San Jose, Costa Rica on May 26 and on the first day in town there was torrential rain from midday to 8pm. I checked the guide book and I'd arrived about 1 month into the wet season.

I was thinking that if it kept raining this way I'd have to pull the pin on Central America and head over to Europe early. I decided to take a shot at touring around costa rica regardless of the wet season and see what happened with the weather.

I got out ...

My S world- sand, surf, sail, snorkel, sunsets

Hola! I rented a surfboard yesterday to give it a try on my own. Went to this little shop where the girl not only let me borrow her bike (which had flat tires and the chain fell off of on the way back!) to go back for my ID at the hostel, but also stored my stuff and rented me a surfboard and rush guard (surf shirt) for less then $4 for the hour. It was an adventure out there on the water! I spent a lot of time just trying to ...

Day 1, 2 and 3

... shop we waited around for all the people in our shuttle so that we could go to La Fortuna. We met a couple from New York that were pretty nice, the man even said he had some friends that were originally from Paducah. Finally after the last couple made it to the Green Turtle we were off to La Fortuna. This was one of the scariest rides ever. We passed houses that looked like something off of the Discovery Channel in the poorest places in the ...

La Fortuna / Arenal

... had all been paved, and it just didnt seem particularly natural. We left the waterfall after being relieved of $24, and headed for the volcano. We stopped off at a few places to go for a walk, only to discover this was also chargable. We decided to drive to Arenal Observatory Lodge. Which was only $4 to get in and it had breathtaking views of the volcano. We even saw a massive rise of smoke erupt from the volcano ...

Wildlife galore

... by mid morning they had become too common to excite much interest at all. We are so easily spoiled. The other reptiles were not to be outdone. There were quite a few freshwater turtles out on logs, I suppose waiting for the sun to come out. But they are very nervous little creatures and flee at the first sight of tourist interest. They were both overshadowed by the basilisks or Jesus Christ lizards, so named for their ability to run a short distance across water ...

Back on track!! :)

... were tons of friendly locals leading the way down the dark road to the surprisingly well lit town of Liberia. I caught a cab to the hostel I am now staying at for $6 a night, which is expensive to what I am used to but still a great deal for Costa. The owners and staff are amazing and friendly and have lifted my spirits 100%. One of them invited me for dinner and won´t stop harassing me at my computer!! Haha, I only ...

Tamarindo... home of the Gringos

... a lot of black clothes with me for a reason. So for a country that is the most wealthy in all of Central America, they have the absolute worst roads. It's absolutely unbelievable. Even Nicaragua had better roads. Oh well, a few more days and we're done here. We are taking 4 days here to flake out on the beach and hopefully recharge (it's either that or I am on the next plane to head to a developed country!), then head ...
