Historical Traveler Reviews of Barcelo Huatulco Beach Resort
Fabulous Holiday
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Barcelo hautulco and stayed for 13 nites in Feb 2004. The hotel may not be a 4.5 star, as it is older (about 15 yrs) so of course the rooms are not new, but they are super clean and definitely bigger than the Gala Resort next door. The food was excellent with several main courses every day, and lots of variety in the salad bar. The one outstanding thing about the hotel, was the people and the pool/beach. I have never met such friendly polite people (and this goes for all of Huatulco). The pool area and beach were great.
The golfing was good, but take lots of balls. No need to take your clubs, as rentals are only $15.00 and the clubs are really decent quality. My only complaint about the holiday was Mexicana Air. They are the rudest, most unhelpful airling I have ever been on. If you think some of the Air Transat flights were bad, wait til you travel with Mexicana. But after all is said and done, I would still travel Mexicana if that was the only wasy to get to Huatulco.
PS If you want to go on a snorkel tour or deep sea fishing, get one of the guys selling it on the beach. The boat we had was the "Mar y Sol", with Tikio. He was excellent. We hired him 3 times when we went.
False advertising

This place was really over rated. Air Transat has it as a 4.5 star. It is really only a three if that. I have sent letters to my travell agent and Air Transat asking for a refund as this was really false advertising. Food can be repitisious, babys in diapers, allowed in adult pool while there is a childrens pool. In order to use either one of the pools you have to dodge volleyballs, frisbe's kids and thier water wings ect ect. There was always aline up for the one bar that had to serve the whole resort, and most times only one bartender. I went there expecting a lot more and had paid for a lot more and it was not up to par for the money paid. If I was aware of what it was I could have gone somewhere else for less. It is a nice area but if you book the Barcello be aware it is not what they rate it at.
Not up to par....

We were forced to stay at the Barcelo resort fot two days due to our intended hotel being over booked. The food selections were basically non existant in comparision to what I have experienced in the past at all inclusives in Huatulco. The staff is barely bi-lingual, and so communication is very difficult and nearly immposible via the phone. We could have had food flown in from the states faster than room service delivered, and the bellman was so slow to the room on our departure, that we had already checked out on our own and began loading in another hotels van before he began to head for our suite. It is not worth the investment if you work hard for your money.
Not five star food!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
The only thing i can fault this place for is the food. My wife is from caracas, i from NY. We were at the RIU palace (5 star in dominican replublic) last year and the food was great great great - while there we checked out the other hotels in the same chain in the complex (there were at least 3 total) - the others were only 3 stars, and their food was a couple notches below the palace (5 star). the food HERE was definitely 3 star food, not 5 star!! Another american from Chicago, Clive, agreed. He had been at the 5 star barcelo at ixtapa recently and said it was definitely far superior to this food - and he'd been travelling for over 20 years with his wife and family!! So DONT get the all inclusive, plenty of good and fairly inexpensive restaurants in La Crucecita go to (a $ US 2.50 taxi ride) - we loved 'em!! Add this to the 2 flights a day out of mexico city to get here
NOT a five stars
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel announce itself as a five starts hotel wich is completly false. It is a average 2 and half or maximum 3 stars hotel in a paradise landscape. The room are old furnished (we also had strong moisture smell in the bathroom), the service is low(only front desk understand english), the food is fast food buffet style, acces deny to restaurant. The ALL INCLUSIVE package is not worth it.I visited 25 countries, three trips in Mexico and this hotel is the worst quality price I had in all my trip.DONT reserve through ... or the site of the hotel they will charge you tree times the fee of mexican people go through an agency.

Great family vacation

Our whole family stayed at the Barcelo Huatulco for two weeks during spring break 2003. The weather is amazing and if you want a place to truly relax, this is the one. The restaurants were excellent, however the house wine leaves a lot to be desired. The staff is wonderfull and treated us like royalty (a little tip goes a long way). It was my husbands birthday while we were there and they made sure his day was unforgetable. The rooms were small and there is almost no english shows on television. We were 5 in a room and we would have done better in a suite which is only 75.00 more a night during high season.
Four times and Counting

This resort provides excellent value for money. Sure it's not picture perfect but if you are looking for a reasonably priced all inclusive holiday then take the package. You won't regret it. We have visited this hotel four times, when it was the Sheraton, and since its takeover by the Barcelo organisation. The same staff, the same ambiance, the same courtesy and attention to customer needs prevails. The trick is to take advantage of the beautiful unspoiled environment of Huatulco and area. As comfortable and reasonable as the hotel is you MUST take a trip to the bays, nine of them in all, which are the most pristine and beautiful on the Mexican pacific coast. There you will find tranquility if you seek it, the most friendly people, and the best snorkeling on the pacific coast that I have found. Take in La Crucecita which is a charming bustling small town with a church that may inspire a revelation and an intriguing market full of bargains. Take in Santa Cruz with it's delightful fishing fleet and market. Visit La Entrega (the surrender), a bay shrouded in mystery and bloody conflict. Ask the locals! But, most of all, relax, eat up the sunrise over Tangolunda Bay, listen to the magpies as they rise to greet you to at breakfast, absorb the mystery of an ancient Oahacan culture, vibrant, alive, but steeped in history. Don't miss the chicken mole at El Sabor in la Crucecita (to die for). If golf is your passion play the course which defied me, frustrated me, defeated me and reconciled me to golf in Mexico. Visit the coffee plantations in the mountains, swim in pristine cool spring fed rivers, swing from jungle lianas into deep and tranquil pools, the list goes on. Just go there!
Wonderful

My husband and I went there for our honeymoon and it was just excellent. The flight wasn't long, the people are so nice, the food is amazing and the place speaks for itself. A definite place to go and enjoy yourself. You can also take your family there, it is very safe to visit the towns at night and during the day. The crucecita has the best tacos ever and the santa cruz has great seafood. Lots of wonderful thing to do. You can go snorekelling, atv'ing and horesback riding and much more. It totally beats cancun. Go ahead and check it out, I promise you will not be disapointed.
We loved it!

We were at Barcelo Huatulco in December of 2001 for a week. We loved it there! It was a very relaxed, easy going environment. The rooms were very nice: lots of room, everything worked well and they were very clean. The staff were good: activities staff very friendly and all the waitresses/waiters & housekeeping were accomodating. Food was good, enough variety. We never found it a problem finding something we liked. The area is very quiet: if you are looking for a party place this is not it! Usually by 10pm the place is quiet although there is a small bar where you can have a bit of fun and get to know a few more of the guests. Most of the guests were Canadian and Mexican with a few from Europe & the USA. Scenery is great: lots of trees and a great view of the ocean from even the lobby. If you are looking to relax in a family friendly environment this is the place for you.
