... a team to ensure they get customers. A basic gondola costs about
$30 000 but one decorated can cost as much as $55 000. Where gondolas are built is called a 'squeri'.

Luckily we were the only patrons for the tour so ended up with a private tour (usually valued at $399) We learnt heaps about the area and saw all of the above sights. We also saw the Bridge of Sighs and a gondola being made in the shape of a tank - ...

DAY 38

It was pretty magical seeing all the old buildings and canals in real life, and photos/movies really don't do it justice! ...

... but the room itself, about 50 m was reasonably empty, so we think it must have been a corridor entrance to something else. Pretty impressive, and cool, and gave us a break from fretting about finding San Marco. The church next to this building was closed, but we would like to make it back here too.

We start our trek again passing some beautiful shops though, and great food shops. I look at a small shop that has the Murano glass jewlery and it ...
