... plus side, we found the magnificent mile. A mile full of shops, Colm was in his element!

We had walked over eight miles in one day and it soon became clear I had to get the old man back, well after a detour to the Michigan avenue bridge of course. Our legs had been used to the fullest today and it was all worth it. We made it back in time as the rain set in. It was so humid that it did not surprise us. The thunderstorms came soon after and normally I am scared of thunder ...

We boarded the California Zephyr to begin our two and a half day trip to Chicago. I have had to stop saying the name of the train as it just leads to having the Chilli Peppers "The Zephyr Song" going round in my head for the next 20 minutes. If you know that song I am glad to have just inflicted it on you too.

From the choice of windows to exoskeletons to curves matching the bends in the river to honeycomb shapes, these features are what make the Chicago skyline like no other. I found myself taking an enormous amount of pictures because every different angle revealed something else about the same building, or it allowed me to combine it with its neighbors in a uniquely framed shot.I got to see many of Chicago's most famous skyscrapers on this ...
