    ... of control quickly with no way to fight it from land. In just a few minutes the air borne fire fighters arrived with their seaplanes.

    They would take on water in the sea then fly a loop to the mountain. Over and over again we watched them take on water as they touch down in the sea just to accelerate and take off again for another lap.

    We drove on for 15 minutes to a place called Raiano where we had a fabulous picnic lunch next to an old hermitage built over a stream in a picturesque gorge. The food was really tasty and very Italian.     Throw in the occasional blue lake and the picture is complete. It was simply stunning. The town was very cultured with a couple of jewellery shops where I treated myself to a ring that was made by the old man who sold it to me. He is the 13th generation of his family to work in the shop. It was fascinating. We also bought a scarf and a wall hanging made from local wool from a charming talented lady.

    ... I think they heard their own heart echoing. Above that on the hill was a monastery with a quite austere chapel. Derek climbed a hill and visited a hilltop castle where the walls were quite intact but with no roof. We then drove a short distance to a quite empty-feeling village where we went to the restaurant of a scientist who has specialised in growing old grains. She looked a bit like a peasant with missing teeth ...

    Woke up early on our next morning in Rome. Breakfast early at the hotel as I was excited to venture out in this city to discover all it had to offer.
