    Goodbye Formia

... to the state of the roads (appalling) and understanding of the Italian driving (ignore all speed limits, road signs, no overtaking areas, etc).

Formia itself is not exactly picturesque which is such a shame, as it has the sea on one side and the mountains in the background, so everything you could really want. The area is clearly a popular holiday destination for the Naples and Rome set ...

    Walk around the Port

Lazy stroll today around to the old Roman port of Formia.

Again, testament to the building skills of the Romans, the port still remains today and would have been a lovely spot to head out for your fishing trips. It is now in a protected zone but as with most of Italy's ancient remains, is fully accessible to all.

The port is on a walk that loops around the headland and also goes up to an old water storage tank, again in a good state of preservation with views out to sea.

On Monday Jane and Mark took the train into Rome for a tour of the main sights and lunch, while we enjoyed the sunshine on our roof terrace. We spent our final evening together playing cards... Mark taught us "Spelt".

Drop off back at the airport on Tuesday and was great to see them both and have some English conversation - funny how much you miss it.

... horses. "Boys. Those are cows," I told them. The cow-horse is now infamous in my mind!

In addition to cow-horses, we saw some wild animals such as red deer and red fox. We heard the wolves, but sadly never saw them at the sanctuary on Friday. I also had the chance to hear a bear loud and clear from across the river early Friday morning. Three or four loud calls followed by the pop of a gun, two or three more calls, another pop of a gun, one ...

... It's still used occasionally today for concerts and night tours. The statues that used to stand there have been moved to museums in Naples and Rome, but the villa museum still has some parts and reconstructions - some of them were enormous!
