      Just cycling in the dark

... for far too long with a fellow cyclist. As a result, we ended up cycling the last five miles in the dark and the rain was once again lashing down. Cycling along the shoulders in these conditions is not nice, as you struggle to see what's on the ground. And you don't tend to go very far without having to avoid some glass, rocks or bits of wood from the logging trucks. The sign to Deane's Oceanfront Motel ...

... As with the hike to Tillamook Lighthouse, we carried our respective passengers and worked up a mean sweat. The views from the top are really impressive and you get a strong sense of just how vast and rugged the Oregon coast actually is. The fog - cloud, mist, whatever its technical designation is - didn't impede the view so much as add to the uniqueness of the spectacle. A patch of ocean and shoreline, beautiful in the ever-shifting swath of clear sky and sunshine. I'd imagine ...

... t let Elliott climb though, for some reason he still doesn't understand! We then drove back down and made the hike out to the rocky shore to see Thor's Well. It's a sunken sea cave that made for some great sights of the power of water. Sarah got soaked posing for a picture next to it. After a little drive farther up the coast, we stopped to check out the Devil's Punchbowl, a massive opening in the rock of the coastline that ...

... if we wanted. Heck yeah! So we headed back to the house to get ready. Martha has a friend who runs an ATV rental company on the dunes, so we got to ride for free, score! We all piled in Martha’s car - Brian, Aiden, Martha, Holden, Gabe and I. When we arrived at the place, Holden was super excited and really wanted to ride a quad by himself - no fear. Sarah, Martha’s friend, let him ride a small quad around the parking lot for a few minutes, while we were all there ...

      Sand hills

We travelled down the coast from Newport to Florence, a beautiful drive down the coast, a little windy on some of the curves but nothing to really worry about.
Jo wanted to come here as she visited the sand dunes back in 1977. We are staying just south of Florence in a place called Dune City, with a population of 2040, so go figure, a city??
The weather is sunny but its still quite cool best we did today was 16 degrees C.
