... for the route through Patagonia. Throughout the whole of our trip so far we have barely considered where we will be the next week, but with only really a month left to cram in probably the best part that Chile/Argentina has to offer, we've had to plan carefully. We have a bit of flexibility built in, but with flights and some accommodation booked, it's getting more rigid all the time.

I was thinking about nothing more than putting one foot in front of the other, getting any decent kind of foothold with my crampons and concentrating on not being swept off the side of Volcan Villarica in the minus Celsius plus gale force wind chill factor temperatures, for 5 hours. All the way to the top. I was scared witless. The only thoughts that crossed my mind in that 5 hours were : 1. ...

At about the 2000 metre mark, 840 metres from the top, we came to a halt along with most of the other groups while our guide assessed the slope above. He came back a few minutes later with bad news, because of the ice we wouldn't be able to summit, but neither would the other groups. We were of course a ...

... worth it. We were back at the campsite by mid-afternoon giving us enough time to hit the lake for a swim. Was a wicked day....definitely a highlight of the trip.

It was sad to leave Pucon as it was somewhere that felt more like a holiday than travelling. We will probably never get back there but will definitely recommend it to anybody. The following day we were heading back to Argentina.
