... the water feels much colder.

There follows a long section where the path traverses a desert of black volcanic rock and sand. It is fairly featureless and after a while a little boring. Occasionally however the black tedium is punctuated by jagged obsidian hills rising out of the plain, covered with lime-green moss, looking to me like the reptilian skin of a sleeping giant dragon, a slumbering saurian waiting to be roused. ... to the campsite the day before. Then it passes a steaming geothermal vent before starting to ascend through the hills. This first section of the hike is said to be one of the most challenging as it mostly goes uphill and the net ascent is 500 metres, but I don't find it too challenging despite the heavy load on my back, as the scenery is so astonishing along the way. The excellent weather and perfect visibility mean that I can see everything for miles ...

... 20am so we headed down to the depot.

We had 45 minutes till the train left so we stopped in an interesting shop and browsed a bit before continuing down to the railroad depot. We stopped on the way as we passed St. Mary’s of the Mountain to find out what time Mass was then continued on down the road.

We still got there in plenty of time to watch the men hook up the open car and the caboose to the steam engine #29. ...

... was only a drizzle for about 15 mins. A second pouring of rain came a little harder but again only lasted for a short while. We are so glad that we took the northern route because we got to see some cows (see pictures) grazing alongside the road. ... Roz made a beautiful bridesmaid to the blushing bride while distinguished Bob acted as best man. The ceremony was short but touching, there were tears in everyone's eyes as the nervous groom tentatively brushed the lips of his new wife who swooned in his arms.
