Simple place but cheap. Food is okay but better outside. Staff is wonderful especially Anna who made me feel at home. Nice place to meet other travellers or to play a game of pingpong or Pool. You can jump into the Lake for a refreshing swim.

Lovely setting but can be noisy at night

The most beautiful setting right on the lake. Comfortable reasonable value rooms and nice restaurant. Sun beds and easy access to lake, right in the village with shops and lots of places to eat.
Can be noisy at night, Malay and Indonesian families do not keep their children quiet as Europeans do so 6;00 am start is not unusual,,,also the hotel does attract young bag packers who want to jump in the lake and party at 3;00 am !!!
      eat at bamboo, great value.
don't bother to buy your transport back to medan in advance, just get early ferry and take pot luck. We booked and still waited 1 1/2 hours...

Good views. Good food. The staff are friendly and made us feel welcome. Great spot top hang out in the evening with live performances from local bands with local music (and western).
Rooms are comfy. Budgets for all.

      Exploration, rain, and the Oscars

A travel blog entry by sw19mike on Mar 03, 2014

Today is the day to explore the "mainland". That's what we now call the bulk of Samosir Island, away from the TukTuk carbuncle.
Once up, scrubbed and dressed, I ask in reception for some more loo paper for our room, and when I take it back, I look at the wrapping in disbelief: "Romantic 2-ply toilet tissue"! All the times I spent in Japan many …

      What a noisy place!

A travel blog entry by sw19mike on Mar 02, 2014

We all met up in the dining room for breakfast. There is a massive extension being built on to the hotel, and we had been warned by some other travellers on the ferry over from Parapat that sometimes the noise was really bad. But Eric had assured us that it wasn't true. Well, at 8 o'clock the score was Other Traveller 1, Eric 0. We sat there in …

A good night's sleep (didn't manage to watch House of Cards), and up early to sit on the porch, looking over the garden to the 'ocean'. Lots of brown bodies leaping into the water with shrieks of happiness, and lots more with fishing rods, pulling out the occasional fish, but not very big.
Today is market day in Tomok, another village on …

Dear followers It's been quite a while since my last update and one of my new years resolutions is to more frequently update the site. I am sitting at the beach now at Ko Mak and it's pitch dark. Hearing the water of the sea reminds me of one of my favorite place so far on the trip, Lake Toba and Samosir island. The trip from Medan is a 4 hour show …
