Simple place but cheap. Food is okay but better outside. Staff is wonderful especially Anna who made me feel at home. Nice place to meet other travellers or to play a game of pingpong or Pool. You can jump into the Lake for a refreshing swim.

Lovely setting but can be noisy at night

The most beautiful setting right on the lake. Comfortable reasonable value rooms and nice restaurant. Sun beds and easy access to lake, right in the village with shops and lots of places to eat.
Can be noisy at night, Malay and Indonesian families do not keep their children quiet as Europeans do so 6;00 am start is not unusual,,,also the hotel does attract young bag packers who want to jump in the lake and party at 3;00 am !!!
      eat at bamboo, great value.
don't bother to buy your transport back to medan in advance, just get early ferry and take pot luck. We booked and still waited 1 1/2 hours...

Good views. Good food. The staff are friendly and made us feel welcome. Great spot top hang out in the evening with live performances from local bands with local music (and western).
Rooms are comfy. Budgets for all.

All photos are at http://tulsatrot.travellerspoint.com From Berastagi, I rode 3 mini-vans to the port town of Parapat. From Parapat, I would jump on a ferry and leave the next morning to Tuk Tuk, a small town on Samosir Island in the middle of Lake Toba. Of note, Indonesia has an alarming rate of man made destruction of their forests and there a...

      Lazing at the lake

The day following the trek we were back on another rickety old bus, bumping and weaving our way back down Sumatra. Yan sat happily beside us, having decided it would be best if he escorted us down to Lake Toba, even though we insisted we'd be fine. "Oh I'd like to, now that I feel we are friends bla bla bla". We've definitely heard that one befo...

      Minangkabau culture and jungle trek

Welcome to the land of the Minangkabau. The name Minangkabau is a conjunction of two words, minang ("victorious") and kabau ("buffalo"). In order to immerse myself into the culture, I attended a cultural performance highlighting Minagkabau dance, costumes, music, songs and self-defence. It was a colorful and very entertaining program (40.000 rup...

From Melaka to Dumai by boat

Getting restless in Malaysia with the heat, the city and the people, I yearned for cool air, greenery, and small villages. I was so ready to move on even with all the good food everywhere; I never went hungry in Singapore or Malaysia and yes, I have been eating chicken everywhere. But one of my favorite foods is roti which comes in a variety of ...
