... operated a 24hr checkout policy, in other words, we had to check out by 4.30am the next day. So we paid for another night..what's 4 quid when you need to sleep eh? After a long sleep, we ate our first lunch in Udupi. Udupi has a number of 'meal' joints which serve a limited range of 'meals'...which are, errr, meals - everything you need all on one plate. So our first lunch was iddli with sambar and sambol. Iddli are steamed rice cakes, sambar is a tangy stew, and the sambol was made ...
Udupi, India sim_armitt... aforementioned thalis. We had one last night, and it is the best so far. Of course, being in the South, its spicier, and also eating with your hands is mandatory - I'm sure I could have cutlery if I asked, but I'm not bad at it, and it seems to cause less of a scene by joining in as everyone else does. Yesterday we went to see the temple, where they have an elephant outside giving out blessings instead of a priest, quite a funny ...
Udupi, Karnataka, India pmitchell1981... för heller. Till min förvåning märkte jag att man här har sexdagars arbetsvecka, vilket innebär arbete på lördag. Men i systemet ingår 4 "fria" dagar per månad.
Manipal, Karnataka, India mlovholm... I was stared at by seven waiters in the empty restaurant for the entire duration of my meal! On the way back, I bumped into some French girls I'd met at Honey Valley who were also staying in my hotel. We went down to the temple to see the evening pooja but had missed it and I met the guide they'd used that day - Pranesh - who I arranged to show me around the next day. Udupi was stifling hot and the room was suffocating. I was happy to get out of there for ...
Udupi, India dynamite_dinahWell as Pete Tong as it can on a scorching hot, palm lined beach!! Bloke didnt turn up for the trekking crack and I awoke at 2am to find myself with the worst and most debilitating man cold of my life!! I had a sore throat the day before but put this down to the shivering night on the bus or the usual air con clog of yer pipes. I couldnt walk without appearing drunk.Though years in training paid off and I held a better line than I should have! I couldnt hear much ...
Palolem, India buddhabing... Bob gave me and sprayed it for a good 30 seconds. I admit, whilst I sprayed I also screamed. I couldn't control my reaction, it was just so shocking and horrific the way it scuttled around the floor and all over my stuff and wriggled about. At last it suddenly froze, and then one of the waiters flicked it out with a broom. I caused quite a stir in the vicinity screaming and all. Some unsympathetic people downstairs who were talking way too loudly called up in a ...
Goa, India cruisekate... NO helmet through a monsoon in full force. Its like being under a power shower with someone throwing buckets of water at you... cool fun though. we had to abandon the 'pretty foolish idea' halfway through and run for cover under a garage, but what a laugh!!! After a week of spreading my time between Anjuna, Calangute, Baga, and Vagator it was time to head down south, to the beautiful beaches of Palolem and Agonda. Palolem is THE beach to be in ...
Goa, India simontann... Star. . hee. . . hee. . . Perhaps you are growing a little weary of me getting stuck in certain places, and to tell the truth, dear reader, I have had itchy feet for quite a while. I will miss Mama and her family, who have all but adopted me, but Rocinante is repaired, polished, and calls to me in my sleep. Perhaps you can understand, on the other hand, how hard it is to leave such a place. But with the End Of Season Madness on the way, I know now not to make the same mistake twice.
Palolem beach, India bloomer... we had to get a bus to the town centre (a 30 minute journey) and from there we had a further 20 minute walk to the hotel. The hotel was a converted, old Portuguese style villa perched on a hill overlooking the harbour. We got quite a good deal (about 300 rupees) on the room which had direct access on to the lengthy balcony. It was a Sunday and almost everything was closed (Goa is predominantly Christian) so after an hours rest we walked to one of the few places that we ...
Goa, India danandrosemarie... 3rd Dec is his feast day when they carry him around in a parade, it was a bit crackers when we went so we're not too bothered about missing the celebrations. Interesting fact. It's exactly 10 years since Paul was last in Goa & also the last time St Francis was disturbed. Last time Paul was here he went to the hippy market at Anjuna beach. He had a brilliant time watching the albino circus family, fire eaters, snake charmers & acrobats. He also ...
