How have we avoided overnight buses for so long?

It was inevitable, we were going to take one of those behemoths through the night at one stage or another, don't get me wrong, I don't mind them but given half a chance I'd rather take a sleeper train or break the journey up a little bit but this one just had to be done. More on that later.....

Getting up today had a little bit of sadness attached as it was to be our last day in Chiang ...

Welcome back to Oni's travel stories.......

As my plane circles Bangkok late at night, I felt like I wanted to back it up, stick the plane in reverse, as I was hanging onto the life I left which I loved in NZ, sitting in a unusual state of flux inbetween cultures. As anticipated I walked out of the airport to be hit in the face by the humid heat wall of Asia. In the taxi into the city going 160 on the motorway, no seat belts worked, and hanging my head out the window I couldn't help go wahooooooo ...

Two Nights In Bangkok & The Worlds NOT Your Oyster

Right-o-, so, where was I? Oh yes, on the way to Bangkok! Gee golly wiz I'm behind on these blogs, which means I'll skip the small trivial details about our farewell to Liz, or the 3 hour car ride with a driver named Chewy, or our long search for Collin and Beau. These events, although annoyingly hilarious in retrospect, do not seem worthy of your attention. I would even go so far as to say Bangkok in general was a bit anticlimactic. I mean, Thai people go ball to the walls for ...

The journey begins

Ok, so I decided to write a blog something I never thought I would do as it's not really me, but I guess time calls for change. Due to my recent 'relocation' to Northern Thailand I figured it's the best way to keep friends and family updated on what I'm doing out here, instead of regurgitating the same thing in emails and also to spread the news about what I'm trying to do out here. So...... what exactly am I doing out ...

Death Road in death Songtaew

The refugees of Mae Sot

... with activities and games to keep the kids busy. Our group consisted of a family from the US, of whom the father was a university professor the mother a librarian... and the daughter who was 12 and the same age as the Thai students, a Dutch student, a French dude and his Thai friend (who spoke perfect English... actually better than the French guy), Anita and myself. The librarian quickly took over, and used the classic English teaching tool... The Hokey Pokey. We ...

Day in the Mountains

... It didn't have an automatic transmission and it had a kick start. Shifting wouldn't be a problem because my roommate in college had a motorcycle and, although it had been 8 years, I was sure I would be able to handle that. I had never used a kick start. But I had seen it done. So I jumped on the bike, kicked the crank, revved the engine (a la every cool movie I had ever seen), and the engine was alive. I was very proud of myself. I looked up for affirmation of my ...

Far from Home

... t care about our $7 a night because they knew they had several hundred dollars worth of guests coming in a few days. But one of the girls at the guesthouse was incredibly friendly and helpful. She spoke very good English and even rented us her motorcycle one day so we could explore some of the surrounding mountains and villages. So that was our day trip out of town. I'll post that next.

The Road to Nowhere

... street. I walk across town and go up to the Wat. On my way back down I see the same lady on the motorcycle. She says she'll drive me to look at hotels. There are no guesthouses here, so all the hotels are expensive in preparation for the holiday. She takes me to see where the ceremony will be that night. She is amazed that I am alone. "You're not afraid of anything?" Finally we find a nice place that doesn't cost a ...
