Last day in Tres Lagoas

It's almost sad to see this place go. The staff here at the hotel have been very nice and the people I've met at the mill have become friends. And they've all become accustomed to my broken Portuguese. But it's time to leave now after 3 and half months. And we're heading to Porto Seguro next! I'm actually not all that sad to say goodbye to Tres Lagoas, the city itself, though. It's a very, very, very sleepy town. All of the ...

Back in Tres Lagoas & back to day shift

Ok...so a quick update (quick because it's 4am and I really should be asleep, but my sleep schedule is all out of wack) I'm now back to working day shift...for at least a little while longer. I had gotten about 4hours notice that I needed to switch shifts, so I didn't get to do it properly like I normally would have. I can't really go into detail here, but we don't have to work so much anymore so ...

To the Pantanal

... but it was actually 10am as the west is an hour behind eastern Brasil) we find our YHA is directly across the road from the station and the Pantanal Trekking company is inside there also. I had read this company does excellent budget wetland tours. We actually were sought out by the company rep at the station and within half an hour were on a bus to the wetlands with a bus ticket booked for our return trip and a ticket to take us on return in 4 days to the Iguaçu falls area. No time ...

... by a caimen so we stopped to feed it piranhas...it was definately after some human meat though. There were so many mosquitos here that you could hear them buzzing in your ears. That afternoon we had our third activity which was piranha fishing. This was so much fun and theres a good story to tell from this afternoon. Em almost died! Ok so the story has become a bit exagerated with everytime we tell it but she really did almost lose her foot. In ...

Getting Back to Nature in the Pantanal

... some of the different plants. We were supposed to go on another longer walk in the afternoon but as the other people who had been part of our group had left we girls were able to sweet talk our way out of the walk and into necklace making! That night we were introduced to Brazil`s national drink the Caprinha. And boy were we introduced! During the necklace making we got to chatting with the barman who let us know it was much cheaper to just buy a bottle of cachaca (the ...

... of birds and goats at 4am wants nice though! we saw hundreds of cayman and god only knows how many different types of bird. Brazilian Pantanal

... Back in the lodge it was definitely beer o'clock and time for dinner, a shower and bed. Our second full day started with another safari drive to an area of water where a large number of caimans can be found. There is also an island in the middle appropriately named Caiman Island, bm bm. Well, we can now say we have seen crocodiles, alligators and caimans, but never did we think we would get so close to these animals. We were standing feet away from them ...

... we really were deep deep into the jungle and the only way out was this small tin boat that would hopefully come back through alligator infested water when we asked. We bravely said we would stay for 4 days and waved goodbye to the boat and the last sign of civilisation. Without no time to spare as the rain and nightfall were approaching we quickly set up our tents and dived inside just as the rain started. As we had no time to collect fire wood and start a ...
