... they raised the sails. Before long we were powering along by the power of the wind, making the odd tack her and there. After sailing along the South Coast for awhile and to provide a smoother voyage during dinner, the boat was turned around and we were under sail in the opposite direction. I found a spot up front, on one of the two trampoline type mats, with the sight and sound of the ocean below me, one of the crew kindly brought me my dinner; a delicious and perfectly cooked steak ...

It was also no surprise to hear that 9.58 inches of rain was recorded hitting the North Shore of Kauai Friday night. The Hanalei Bridge was closed until Saturday morning and one body was recovered when a flash flood swept a 19 year old off her feet.

Think I'll go walk the bay this morning and maybe find a mango smoothy for lunch or ...

It seems that the north end of Kauai Island has the greatest variance in weather due to the influences of trade winds and the huge mountains situated in the centre of the island. Mount Waialeale and Mount Kawaaikini tower over 5000 feet in height, nearly 1600 metres. The area is only accessible by helicopter, with roads only skirting the coastline for three quarters of the island. The mountainous area in the centre of the island receives the highest annual rainfall ...
