... Traveling has made me made a slightly more calm person in these types of situations. Without getting angry I tried convincing the women to please let the poor backpacker check-in. She was not having it and said I had to take the next bus, the following morning. I took a deep breath said no thank you and found other means of transportation. Lesson learned.
- When traveling for an extended period of time you eventually are going to get sick. It happened ...
Today was a relative boring one, due to the 5 1/2 hours we had to spend on the bus. The usual stops for toilets or lunch continued as normal. When we finally arrived at Assisi we drove past the Santa Maria deli Angeli, the church at which St. Francis started his order of Monks and eventually died. We drove for a few more minutes ...
... the piazza in front of the massive Cathedral with its ornate facade. A gentleman in the town hall across from it struck up a conversation with us and said it took 12 generations of builders to complete the structure. The town had a nice semi urban vibe to it and I noticed it is on the main train line between Florence and Rome. Easy to revisit without a car. :-)
After leaving Cortona we slipped briefly out of Tuscany to visit nearby Assisi in the province of Perugia. Resting place for St Francis it was sombre to visit his tomb under the church there, however the rest of the town has been transformed into a religious tourist destination. What said it all was the carousel outside one of the churches that was adorned with religious motifs...note the Francescan monks in the background. ...
... fun watching though.
Where we park, outside our villa, if I can't get the very front space, no trees, right outside our gate, then I have to park somewhere behind. The street is full of chestnut trees and they drop a syrupy, sticky sap. It looks disgusting so we expect our little car will have more washes before our hire is up!
I hope you all enjoy the pictures ... Another wonderful day to add to our memories!
