Welcome to the jungle, we´ve got fun and games

Funnily enough that was what I was listening to as we got onto the Amazon river on our speedboat. Nothing more apt than listening to a bit of guns n roses just at the right time, maybe they wrote it just for me :) Well, for once i`ve been dying to write this blog because I had one of the best weeks of my life in Iquitos/Amazon. Sounds all very nat-melodramatic, but this is no lie, I would recommend it to everyone. I`ll start from the beginning shall I? Always seems sensible before I start to ...

Welcome to the jungle

"Welcome to the jungle, we've got fun 'n games"...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =vGLenqEAmTU We definitely found the fun not sure about the games, unless hunting mosquitos has to be considered a game! It's been a beautiful 5 days we`spent deep in the amazonian forest or as they call it here "la Selva". After three three hours of speed boat along the Amazon river and a deviation on the Yanayacu river (an affluent of the Amazon) we reached our lodge, 140 Km far from the main town, Iquitos, the...

Muyuna Lodge, The Amazon

We had the choice of a 2 hour flight to Iquitos or 3 days on a boat experiencing the real jungle life with very little facilities and an abundance of mosquitoes. As we disembarked the plane the heat and humidity hit us immediately. We were met by some Peruvian guy (whose name I can`t remember) from the tour company and he put us on the boat to Muyuna Lodge. Three hours away from any civilisation Muyuna Lodge was an amazing place with clean cabins, mosquito screens, hammocks, no electricity, b...

I Love Lúcuma

I love Lúcuma. It´s that local fruit I was explaining about. Last night I went to Larcomar, the local shopping centre thingy, where there was an outdoor cafe. Had wontons with cheese and guacamole, and Lúcuma cheesecake, for dessert. Wasn´t as good as the Lúcuma cheesecake in Ayacucho, but it was delicious, nonetheless!! MAN, I´m going to miss that stuff, when I get home. But at the same time, I also miss iced caps right now, so, it evens out. Going to find some Lúcuma cookies today maybe. Ma...

Sick...

First off, I`ll say that it`s a good thing Muyuna Lodge screwed up and booked me one day less than I had asked for, because I got horribly sick yesterday morning. Second, I`ll just say that because I`m still sick, this update may not be quite as long and detailed as it otherwise may have. Iquitos is bloody hot out. It`s 100% humidity evey day... that alone is enough to do in a Canadian used to a dry climate, I guess, but it also averages 35 to 40 degrees Celcius, this time of year (according ...

Peru

Punta Sal, Huanchaco, Lima, Iquitos/The Amazon, Lima, Paracas, Nazca Lines, Arequipa, Cusco, Inca Trail, Macchu Pichu, Cusco A very easy and quick border crossing took us into Peru and one of our first long drives. A solid 14 hours along a dessert coastline. Stunning to look at first but then after about 4 hours of the same landscape.... Still we followed the ocean all the way along and I honestly didn't expect that. Peru. Desert. I thought it was all going to be lush and green mountains. Wel...

It´s jungle time!

We´re in the middle of the amazonian jungle at last! We have been staying in a town called Iquitos which is the largest city in the world with no roads out - it´s linked by waterways and air only. Consequently there are very few cars here, mostly small motorbikes and mototaxis making it very noisy. It´s very hot and humid - occasionally the heat is broken by a 2-3 hour torrential downpour which really freshens up the air. The rain is normally accompanied by fierce thunder and lightning making...

Machetes at the ready

I arrived in Peru after a fairly uneventful but very early flight from Buenos Aires (everyone was just going home as I left the hotel in a taxi!!). Dad arrived the next day for 4 weeks with me, so I picked him up from the airport, but we didn't have much time for him to get settled into the idea of being in South America before our very early flight the next morning to Iquitos. The lack of this time to get used to it all was definitely a bad thing when we arrived in Iquitos - the noise and th...

Into the Amazon Jungle

Had the alarm set for 735. Couldn`t be bothered going out so had breakfast at the hotel then packed and read book. The city guide came early as I was the only one heading out to the lodge today so by 930 I was in an old 5 seater speedboat looking at Iquitos receed in the distance. I was with the pilot, the cook, my jungle guide (Moises) a passenger and some memeber of staff perched up the bow of the boat. Not surprisingly the river is huge!! It`s a brown colour as it is relatively fast flowin...

In the Jugle Day 1

Alarmm 545 as we were all going on a morning bird watching tour at 600. It of course started raining at 559 so it was called off and I headed back to bed till breakfast at 800. Headed out with everybody to animal spot from the river but aftera half hour of that Moises and I took the wooden canoe attached to the motor boat and left the others to plunge into flooded trees (no engine see). It was dark, dank and properly jungly Ï guess. Got slimed by overhanging vines often enough anyway! Weirdly...
