Now we're talking

We are now on Sept 9, crossing the border into Botswana. The landscape below is dry and bushy. We land on a tar runway and clear customs and refuel. We are driven into the Mushatu Lodge in an open Land Rover. This is on a private 18,000 acre game reserve that once belonged to Cecil Rhodes. It is in the Limpopo Valley. This lodge is more what we had expected. We are greeted by the staff providing us with cold towels and cold beer. We have just enough time to wash up and join our first game dri...

Tuli Safari Lodge Botswana

... southeast corner where Botswana meets Zimbabwe and South Africa. Part of the journey took us yet again through veterinary gates and police checkpoints and onto a sandy road through the game reserve. The Tuli Block is famous for its Tuli Elephants and the damage that elephants can do to vegetation is very much in evidence here. Still the landscape is more appealing to us as there are hills and valleys, unlike the central area of Botswana where it is ...

... even slower line to get into Botswana, where a lady in a bumblebee costume went sauntering across. Remember, we're in the middle of nowhere. Fantastic. We made the 4 p.m. cutoff by 30 minutes, but knew there were heaps of folks behind us. We later heard that South Africa agreed to keep their border open until 5, but Bots really wanted to go home at 4 - risking the chance of folks being stuck between countries. I'm sure it would never happen.....mostly.

Our first camp ...

BAOBABS IN LIMPOPO

... A BAOBAB The next two nights we stayed at a friend of my guide's on their 5000acre "farm". I slept out under a giant baobab under the stars, while I heard jackals and baboons, among other creatures of the night. Magic! Well, here's some more photos. It takes me about 10min each to upload these!!! After this, I'll be at Kruger National Park till the 17th, then "self-driving" with a ...

Entering Botswana and heading to the Salt pans

... to be less than SA. We arrive at Nata at the Bird Sanctuary and enjoy the ample camp ground with good, but simple installations: http://www.botswanatourism.co.bw/attrac tions/nata_bird_sanctuary.html The next day we enjoy a nice round trip though this part of the pan and the salt lake. Good to have a 4x4 as the piste is quite sandy.

Gaborone to Francistown

... day - a conventional coach taking about 5 1/2 hours costing P51 (At the time of writing there are c. P12.5 to the Pound; the US$ is 2 to the Pound) Francistown is a dusty junction town; I found the Metcourt Lodge - classic motel type comfort with TV, a/c and even free wifi internet with access restricted to google and therefore gmail - great.. P380 The Lodge has an adjacent steakhouse - another T-bone - life's a drag.

Xmas was wack!

Happy new year everybody..... Well my christmas and new year was Wack. On both nights i was tucked up in bed by 10 o'clock bored out of my brain. No drinking games, karaoke etc, and no turkey! For our xmas dinner we had a thing called pookey(i,m sure poo was the key to it), basically guinee fowl and other stuff boiled in a cauldron for 2 days on a fire. The end result looked like poo and puke, and it didnt taste much diffrent. For some reason we had this on xmas eve and opened ...
