... go to Custer State Park, but the consensus is that we should go to Deadwood, supposedly one of the best preserved Western towns in this area. Deadwood sprung up when gold was found in local rivers. All my knowledge of Deadwood comes from the film Calamity Jane and I am gutted to find that in reality Calamity Jane didn't marry Wild Bill Hickock whilst singing show tunes. Instead, Wild Bill is shot in the head whilst gambling only a few weeks after arriving in Deadwood ...

... Roosevelt and Lincoln all carved onto the side of a mountain. In all honesty I did think it would be bigger. I know I didn't walk right up to the thing, but I had always had the image in my mind of the faces taking up an entire mountain side, not just the upper 1/3 of it. ... pictures you see). As we arrived with some time to spare, we had some dinner from the Visitor Center cafeteria. The food was okay, not spectacular. We watched the night program, which included lighting up Mt. Rushmore (after dark). A stunning visual effect.

Afterwards, we returned to the lodge, Ruth and I worked on getting some photos and narratives loaded up to Facebook and to our blog, respectively, and then called it a day.
