    ... about all the stuff - the house painting - the photo editing - the preparations for my departure on tuesday for Portland. So I said good-bye Otto and set off from his place with my kayak back on my car around 12:30. I made it home by 4 pm and tried to get some things done, but as usual as soon as I brought out my paint can, the sky darkened. Oh, well - tomorrow, it must be!

    ... A monumental structure as one of the signs says. It was a great site - the masonry has held up remarkably well. We met the couple there and they told us about a ghost town nearby so we went to check that out and saw them again. As we chatted they told us about Evergreen B&B which you join and then get to go to B&Bs for $$12 a night including breakfast - a great deal. And they said the people were fabulous and friendly.

    ... been uplifted (possibly by a rising plume of magma in the mantle underneath). All the overlying softer rocks (like sandstone and limestone) have been weathered and eroded away, leaving the much harder basement rock. This rock is part of the Canadian Shield formation - some of the oldest rocks on Earth that formed the first part of the North American continent over 1000 million years ago!     We checked out of our hotel and went on a boat tour of Lake Placid. We enjoyed seeing the many "camps" along the lake -many with only boat access. The term "camp" is misleading as many of these are multimillion dollar properties. We heard the story of Mabel Smith Douglass who mysteriously drowned after boating only to be found ...

    ... at Dancing Bear always gave us an enthusiastic "yeah" with any request we made. Our breakfast waitress at Dancing Bear barely spoke beyond the necessary questions and comments. We ate dinner at Player's Sports Bar two nights. Cassie, our waitress was also an enthusiastic college students studying math. We also saw her at while eating breakfast around town.
