... 4 hours over half-finished hair-pinned mountain roads. We arrived tired only to discover that Ooty wasn't the lush, breezy hill station we had been led to believe. It was in fact incredibly grimy and polluted with heavy traffic. All was made slightly worse when the first couple of guest houses we tried were full and we ended up in a place that resembled Postal. ... there was a very nice hat shop awaiting me! I entered the shop and immediately saw a hat that appealed to me - at least enough for me to be able to wear it without having to cower in shame. I asked the price and was quoted 80 rupees, which I found acceptable. But just before I was to pay, a young Indian man entered the shop, picked up the same type of hat, and I watched as he handed over 60 rupees for his hat. To me, this was a game ...

... was about 3pm at this stage and neither of us had had anything to eat since 8am that morning. On arriving at the "New Bus Station" (which I don't think even has an English name yet, as most of them do), and asking for the bus to Ooty, we were hurried to a bus, engine running and just about to leave.
Starving and exhausted, we were passengers on the hairiest bus ride I hope to ever have. The road to Ooty is narrow and winding around steep declines ...

Ooty is where British colonialists used to escape to during the hot summer, as it's a beauty spot at high altitude. Hot enough for me in winter though!
