Heath RIver, 6 hours by boat from Puerto Maldonado Tambopata National Reserve, Peru
Please note that I am back in Durham, but Renee is still in Peru, so this update was written several weeks ago. 4/17/09 Today we departed on what I consider to be our Amazon adventure. Although technically we've been in the Amazon now for two days, we leave the hustle bustle of the city for the jungle. Our mode of transportation is a large covered canoe type boat with a covered top. The entire keel was made of a single ironwood tree and the rest of the boat was made of mahogany...it was beaut...
Heath River Lodge, Peru mcevansHola Dears, I know it is Erev Yom Kippur but this is the Southern Hemisphere and not yet evening (although I should have probably been in or after the Arucha Mafseket had I planned to fast). And now to the travel part. I think I left you somewhere on the Puno-Cusco way, so here goes... Puno to Cusco (17/Sep): We had planned to go with one of the Orient Express trains named Andean Explorer from Puno to Cuscu but due to a series of events (mainly dealing with a travel agent) we were left with t...

... that some researchers found abandoned, they were so tiny their eyes weren´t even open. Unfortunately our powdered milk was no substitute for their mother and we lost 4 in the first night and the other two died the following night. It was very sad.
It was also a busy time at the lodge with a big group called Fauna Forever arriving. They recruit volunteers and conduct research around the region, using several lodges including Explorers Inn ...
... seen one before, even in a zoo. The night before I came down to Puerto Yasmin, Jack and I went on a night walk. It started out quiet but as we neared the end the rainforest seemed to come alive. There were crashing noises in the tree above us, a grunting to our left and some shuffling through the undergrowth to our right. We decided to track down the snuffling. After 10 minutes patient tracking Jack was alking first and suddenly froze with his spotlight pointed at ...

With the forest canopy blocking out any moon or starlight it was impossible to see your hand in front of your face. As sight was now a completely useless sense we were totally reliant on our other senses, particularly our hearing. We strained to hear the noise of any possible tapir approaching but all we heard was the flap of invisible bat wings close to our faces and ...
Tambopata National Reserve, Peru littlemisbakpak... were 2 volunteers here before I arrived, who had done survival courses and were trained in the use of machetes. However they were walking along the trail with the guy in front clearing vegetation and his girlfriend walking too close behind and and he swung the machete down it swung back into her hand. I believe it went to the bone. Luckily a trained nurse dealt with the wound as she was rushed to hospital 3 hours down river. She has since had to have an operation back home too to ...
Tambopata National Reserve, Peru littlemisbakpak... in my face saying we are going on a walk what do you want to do? I am stuck so todays excitement is a 7 mile walk through the jungle in wellies. The rain has made it muddy so we have to wear long pants, wellie boots and I have to carry a backpack with my lunch, I cant have it when I get back? I dont know why??? We went down river for abou 1/2 hr to a set of steps up the bank. Two guides in front carried machete´s and were slashing at the jungle for effect. After a while the ...
Tambopata National Reserve, Peru dzasta... kids did lots of hiking without uttering so much as a peep of displeasure...as everyone knows a 4 hour treasure hunt is infinitely more interesting than a 4 hour trek. The hikes brought out several good messages. We must treat the earth well. Ensure we only take what we need from the forest and replenish what we take several times over. Honour the values of truth, friendship, bravery, freedom and love, and be true to them. And remember that ...
Tambopata National Reserve, Peru elopfamily... clay lick to hopefully spot some parrots feeding. We waited about 30 minutes in silence before they started to arrive. We could hear them in the trees for a while before but, as our guide told us, the clay lick, whilst good for their diets, is also dangerous and there are often vultures, or worse, pumas lurking to snap up any parrot that strayed too far from the group. Finally, though, they came down onto the clay - literally hundreds of parrots of the most amazing ...
