For the next few days we were staying at a cattle ranch three hours drive from Barinas ,not far from the Colombian border. We weren't sure what lay in store but were expecting something a bit like the Pantanal but this time near the Orinoco river. And we weren’t to be disappointed. On entering the long driveway up to the main ranch buildings we were introduced to our first wildlife hosts – several hundred capybara.What a welcome.

after sleeping for a few minutes on a bench at the bus terminal i woke up at 6.45am. i waited till 7.30 to call my tour guide to tell them that i have arrived in barinas - he informed me that he was leaving merida and would meet me in the terminal at 11.45ish. i sat down and ready alittle bit of lonley planet-- when at about 10 guns shots rang out and people came running through the terminal screaming i quickly grabbed my bags and found cover. utter chaos a barrage of rocks and bullets ...
