It's been 48 hours since we had running water. At home, this would be an inconvenience at most. Here, it’s a bit more than that.
At home, if there were no running water, you would hardly find yourself thirsty. You could run to the store to buy bottled water, juice, Gatorade or anything else you like to drink; hit the drive-thru of a fast food place and get an extra-large diet Coke; or simply drink water, coffee, or tea from the kitchen at work.
As for ...
We went to the bank to exchange dollars for cordobas. How could that be worth writing about? Well, the experience started with the two security guards outside the door. They check your bags (I had to leave my camera outside with them). They then unlocked the door so that we could go in. There was another guard just inside the door to make tell us to leave our bags at the door with him. We then got into ...
Ocotal, Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua heathercharlesHola from Las Mercedes!
This is Heather. It's been almost a week now of living and working on the farm and we're are doing really well. It's rustic but not bad at all. We have our own room and bathroom, running water, electricity, a good kitchen with a refigerator, toaster oven and a gas stove top with 2 burners. Pots, pans, plates, cups, silverware - everything we need. There are small lizards around, but we hardly notice them and so far, no weird ...
We made it to Las Mercedes. It was an adventure getting here. We took two buses from Managua and ended up getting off at a different bus stop then we had directions for. That resulted in a 2 hour "adventure", but we made it. Work is tiring but fun and we both are finding lots of projects to work on at the farm.
My family and I took a nice little hike to a nearby waterfall - it really wasn't a difficult hike at all - a few dips and uphills on 5 km worth of dirt road (we were traveling with youngsters, so all the better). It was just nice to be out and tramping through nature again. We set off at a leisurely pace, stopping to admire the city of Estelí from a bird's eye view or to pick low-hanging jacote (a small, tart yellow fruit which has a ...
Estanzuela, Estelí, Nicaragua alicetin... the headache thing didn't let up. The landscape on this road really was something, especially considering it's fairly remote, evidenced by the numerous shacks and obvious poverty. Beautiful place though.
Finally I got into Esteli and not a moment to soon. Getting a ride from the terminal to Parque Central, I began asking around for a hostel I heard existed. After a little asking and searching I found it and the cafe across from it, and inside the cafe I found a very ...
... expecting a simple tour of the factory and maybe a cigar or two but was I wrong. I got there a day and half prior to my appointment and looked around. I noticed there were people dieing a lot. There were two funerals or possessions where they put the coffin on the truck and play music and walk behind the truck. There is even a coffin store right on the Central Avenue. The first place I asked about a room, I saw a coffin in the room off of the ...
Esteli, Nicaragua mikedolan... communicating with him. They speak too fast and mumble in the countryside and he didnīt really understand what we said, but Paul persevered asking the same questions over and over until he made himself understood. Unfortunately we were possibly there at the wrong time of year as the landscape was dull and brown from lack of water. He kept saying you had to be there in May when it begins to rain. At the watering hole he ...
Esteli, Nicaragua sainty1Notes for other backpackers
Where to stay: I stayed at Hotel Merida and it was boring. I kind of have the feeling that people only go to Esteli for language school.
Where to eat: There is good pizza at the White House.
Other stuff: I didnīt have a guide or anything at the Heroes and Martyrs' Gallery and found it a bit boring.
