Los Llanos is famous for its birdlife and there were really many of them. I stayed in the southern part and was the only tourist at the posada. They can accomadate up to 40 people so it was a bit strange being alone. Well, not completely, as the first night I had a bat sharing my room and the second night a frog! During the day we with a dugout canoe on the river spotting fresh water dolphins and sorry that I don't have a good photo but those animals are difficult to ...

So for Ian`s birthday we decided to sign up for a 4 day tour into the Venezuelan wilderness known as Los Llonos, pronounced Los Yanos. The tour was organised by our Posada (backpackers residence) so it was convenient to roll out of bed and into the Land Rover for the tour starting at 8am. Our co travellers, a DIVINE Spanish couple, Mercedes and Jaquin, were late as she was up sick all night. Nice. Soon it struck ...

Trip to Los Llanos - Day 3

A travel blog entry by aanda on Jan 20, 2009

Breakfast at 8am (8.30am) as before and we are shown our horses. Mine is a small aptly named Conejito (Bunny) who likes to be in front. Alexanders (we will call him Baileys, I cant remember the cream liquer name) is scared of mine and breaks into a disrhythmic trot. Not so good for Alexander! Birgitte is a rider and takes off into a gallop which the others copy. Richard has not ridden before and probably wont after this! I can do ...

Our bathrooms are inside but come with bugs, crickts and frogs! Im not used to someone/something watching me in the shower! We have breakfast of scrambled egg with tomato, onion and a green veg, arepa (cornbread), melon, juice and coffee. Today the sun is shining as we drive along the dusty road to an inland waterway. The guides from the camp attach the outboard motor and we get in the boat. Its funny seeing Juan ...

We leave the rucksacks at the Posada and get in the 12 seater Ford Econoline with Juan with the broken foot! He had a motorbike accident and now his young bike mechanic (also Juan) is driving the tours for him. You can tell he still hasnt gotten the bite point of the clutch yet! On the trip also are Richard (Sweden), Birgitte and Eric (Holland). We make a few stops along the way up the mountains to buy fruit, meat, water, beer, vegetables etc. We also stop to see a stone church built by ...
