... touristy and the jumping-off point for Torres del Paine and the Navimag ferry. Not much more to the place. Really. Nothing.

I met Loki (tall Ozzie with dreads) on the bus, and upon leaving the bus we bumped into a totally batty girl trying to get us to stay in her hostel. We ended up at here hostel. I can`t remember it`s name (or hers) but it was distinctly average and she was indeed a complete fruitloop. She gave us a whirlwind tour of town, took us for the ...

Torres Del Paine

... there long and headed out early the next morning. The hike is in the shape of a W and we started from the right and worked are way to the left, seeing the Torres first and the glacier last. It is possible and more common to start with the glacier first. Going up to each point and then moving over to the next. A place with no cars and in some places no horses. The first day in the park the weather was sunny, slightly rainy, and windy. We hiked that day ...

Fernando Torres del Paine

... but we could already see from the surrounding scenery that this place was all about its natural beauty. The famous Torres del Paine mountain loomed in the background, based in apparently South America´s ´finest´ National Park. It was Torres del Paine we had come to see and there were a few options on how to see it: 1) The popular 4-5 day trek called the ´W´, not after the seminal Wu Tang Clan album, but because the trek route pretty much looks like a ´W´. 2) The 10 day ...

Mountains, fjords and glaciers - an icy wonderland

... in season, this refugio was already closed. Day 4: Back and forth to Mirador Las Torres for outstanding views of the Paine Towers. Afterwards shuttle bus back to Camp Pehoe. As I was already in Torres del Paine 5 years ago and already walked up to the Torres and Glaciar Grey, I spend instead 2 nights at Refugio Paine Grande allowing me to go back and forth to Valle Frances. However the weather was all but nice and we got ...

... got a little lost, since the whole town consists of odd one-way roads that sometimes change direction in the middle of the street. That, and the street signs are basically nonexistent. We managed to find the hostel we had booked, where the owner explained that she didn't have any rooms, but she had found us a room at her friend's hostel around the corner. It was all good; we checked in and got some sleep in preparation for Torres del Paine the next day.

Hiking in Southern Patagonia - Torres del Paine

... retracing our steps to Refugio Pehoé the following day, we caught a catamaran back to the main park road, where our bus awaited. Back in Puerto Natales, we stopped in at our previous hostel to gather a few belongings we'd stored there, expecting to have a place to sleep. Much to our surprise and concern, we discovered that this hostel, and every other one we tried, was full. At 10 pm this is not good news, so we began a wander around town ...

Breakdown, with a view

... along for holes in the oil pan, but we gave it a try, and damn if it didn't hold. Next morning: off to the park! 80 miles north of town, about 1/2 of it gravel. After getting through the gate I went across a parking lot to get past a tourist bus. There was a ditch between me and getting back on the road and I hit it at an angle, and didn't think too much of it - until somehow it wiped me out! In front of about 50 people, of course, nice move ...

Before I head off to torres del Paine

... Not necessarily for me as I could not believe how well I felt, although at times I felt a little motion sickness. Also the swell was only 3 to 4 meters. Luckily they played concert videos of the Queen, Madonna, Cat Stevens, Elton John to keep our focus off the motion of the boat. As for the Italian guy, I think Karma plays a big role in peoples lives and he vomited for most of the 12 hours we were in the Pacific. I will not gloat here because I am sure it will also come back ...
