Destination 352

km175'574

In desert surroundings I cross the Great Karoo to Queenstown. Weather becomes more sunny wich helps to melt ice on tent. I change accommodation to Hotels... I head South to the mountains, which approaches me more than the desert.
Malealea, Lesotho vmarchal... mind, make them think about something else.

Can you explain what work Clowns without Borders conduct in the communities?
First we visit the communities and do clown shows. It introduces the concept of clown to them and enable us to have a first contact. When we then come back for a residency [a full programme of workshops over a year aiming at providing laughter and emotional relief to children and caregivers in Communities affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, and violence ...
Malealea, Lesotho flolafol... looking highrises. A lot nicer than we had anticipated. From there we continued down to the village of Malealea which is considered one of the gems of Lesotho and its easy to understand why, the scenery totally picturesque, set in mountains and valleys. We were blessed with good roads bar the last 7km which was a bumpy dirty one. We entered the village around 10 and were greeted with waves and smiles. Malealea Lodge is a lovely place ...
Malealea, Lesotho oliveramber... sun. All of a sudden the piste was turned into a brand new 2 lane road that followed the hill crest with gentle curves. Wow what a change to ride and suddenly after 10 km the wide road changed into the same old piste as before. But the scenery is breath taking and lead over 3 passes (some more than 3000 m high) closer towards Maseru the ...
Mafeteng, Lesotho silo... also partly because the electricity is switched off here at 22:00. 27 July - Malealea, Lesotho For perhaps the first time on this trip, we were able to wake up at the civilized hour of 8:00, have breakfast at 9:00 and then start our walking tour of the local village at 10:00. The tour led us into local shops, homes and even the local bar. It was a unique opportunity to see African life from the inside. I took lots of pictures, which are displayed here ...
Malealea, Lesotho bangkokrandyWe decided to do the Sani Pass day trip on Friday. Our guide, Stephen, was a local and turned out to be a great guide. We started from the lodge and made our way to Lesotho via the pass in Stephen's 4 X 4. Sani Pass was established as a trader's route from the border of South Africa to Lesotho. Now it is a World Heritage site and a commonly traveled route from Lesotho into South Africa, even though it is a windy, steep and seemingly dangerous mountain road ...
Sani Pass, South Africa aksheehanWhen we were leaving Nieu Bethesda we planned to just go up through Bloemfontein to the Northern Drakensburg Mountains, but Ian, the guy who cooked and helped run the Backpackers there, told us of a better, paved route that would take us south of Lesotho through the whole Drakensburg Mountain range. He said there is a great new backpackers at some waterfalls near Maclear. We drove the beautiful paved country route ...
Maclear, South Africa tomlinej... because I cannot describe. I was bemoaning the conditions to my friends, and they said Haiti is MUCH worse. The help from the different organizations is wonderful, but it is just a drop in the bucket....more than just a money issue, but I don't know what the answer is. Each teacher I have talked to mentions how rich America is, and how we have no problems. I ...
Maseru, Lesotho markybess... son of the soil (I said I am a daughter of the soil), and that we go back to the earth. I said yes, that is true. After that he was just talking and I did not know what he was saying. The others in the bus were looking at me strangely, and it did feel funny to know I was being talked about, but I figure that is part of the experience. The bus guy kindly interrupted and said I was to get out, so thus ended my first bus ride. Next time I will sit in the ...
