So much potential

... built in the 1st or 2nd Century and held 20,000. It was used for chariot races and gladiator fights and is still in use today during the bullfighting season. Very cool! Forgot to take a photo unfortunately.

Up early to make use of free Wifi - that is Kim watched the sunrise while sitting outside a closed café and scabbing their Wifi! We then we hightailed it out of Arles and towards Spain.

... the old stone replaced like this. But if it wasn’t done, there would be nothing left to see! Also, who’s to say what is ‘original’ and what is not after so long a time. For a building as old as this, I believe a few renovations have taken place over the years!

Just down the street was the Theater Antique, or Classical Theater. A century ...

... not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.

But what a sad story of a man impassioned by his art, yet rejected by all around him. To the point where only his brother befriended and supported him. Only selling 2 paintings during a lifetime, and even those that are given away ended up on hen-house doors and shot up by young passersby ...

Jinxed

... to be wagered. Anyway, behind us was a French man who emitted a loud sigh every time my friend shuffled the cards, as it seems the shuffling was making too much noise. So, we shuffled them a new way to lessen having to listen to his loud sighs.

Our train finally arrived in Avignon, albeit 30 minutes late, which seems to be unusual over here. We hauled our bags out the station and waited in a line with several ...

... the wind to walk across the bridge in the evening to Avignon for dinner. This morning we went on a wine tour (I know, but it is too hard to resist) around the Cotes du Rhone with Phillipe, a very competant and helpful local guide. We ended up at Chateauneuf du Pape drinking wonderful reds which has been a wine hightlight of the trip - the village has the most amazing view of Provence ...

... across the street – La Palette Gourmande (29 Rue Roussy), but we thought we would wander around and see what else was on offer. However, while we were doing our washing in the nearby launderette, it started to rain. At first it was just a gentle refreshing shower, but became a thunderstorm lasting for hours. By dinner time it was still lashing down, so we ran the 5 metres across the road.

We were rewarded by one of those ...

... and i haven't been in touch, but i'm here now.....i think i will just need to have jason drive me there before i loose my nerve....

so i was told at dinner that the ******* had plateaued off today as i did not feed him any salad. i think thats a bit of a misnomer, as plateau seems to imply level off to normal levels, but in this case, its like level off at 80% instead of 120%. so basically, i am destined to a life ...

The one with la in-TER-net & la lame keyboard.

... wandered up and down the main streets in search of la internet, and even asked at a couple of hotels but no one seemed to understand what we were asking for. Having assumed "internet" would be understood worldwide, we weren't really sure how else to ask. Eventually this man in a little deli was so keen to help that he kept making us repeat it. "In-ter-net" we all tried saying, slowly and articulately. We probably stood there for about 5 minutes ...

... unrolled the awning in time. I made it back to the hotel and just relaxed for a while. At 16:00, the sun had come back out after 2 hours of rain, and I was happy that the weather had cleared up in time for the festivities. Off I march down to the amphitheatre and get in line for tickets. Had a nice chat with a couple from Chicago about our travels, and suddenly a man comes up asking if I had tickets. I thought he wanted to scalp his.......but ...
