Rock Climbing and Pink Sheep in Hawkes Bay

... Town's or Sydney's, but still nice. We saw sharks and I got to hold a blue tonqued skink, who was very tame. His blue tonque is super cool. We explored the waterfront walk and then we went to lunch at a vineyard called Black Barn. After lunch, we went to the Farmyard Zoo near our house. They had lots of funny farm animals and we got to feed them. I liked the kune kune, or New Zealand pigs, who have funny noses and terrible teeth! They look like ...

Charlotte Sound, last day in South Island

... driving to Picton where we arrived with plenty of time to spare before our ferry. From Picton the ferry sails along the Queen Charlotte Sound all the way to the Cook Straight, so the first part of the ferry trip was very nice and we could enjoy the amazing scenery. We loved the South Island and we were a bit sad to leave. Having spent longer than planned there, we found ourselves with just over a week for the North Island, so we ...

Just arrived in Nelson. Frank left on Wednesday to cross to the North Island. he caught a fish yesterday on the Manawatu river. I will be here for four nights. Tonight there is an art and craft fair in town and I will get to it! Had a wonderful day yesterday being guided around by Fran. We went to Havelock for lunch on the sound- the ...

Nelson (Mandela house would of been better!)

... And living out of a backpack is starting to take its toll. Our last port of call was the Nelson lakes just before departing to Westport. This place was truly amazing with postcard perfect scenery round every corner. Already we can see a major difference between both Islands with the North more built up and the south much more rural and scenic. Well, enjoy the pictures from our new camera: only the best piccys for our loyal viewers! Kia Ora J & H xx

Journey to the centre of New Zealand

... with such high foluting concepts mummy soldiered on and managed to get her hair straightened later that day by wedging her rucksack under the socket, thus preventing the offending droop. When we got E's complicated text mummy was dithering about buying some shorts. I advised her against it, mummy in shorts is not a pretty sight, but the weather forecast for the next few days was for lots of sun, so as the shorts were in the ...

Finally on the South Island

Havelock

A less stormy night and we awoke to a clear but cold morning and the sight of fresh snow on the top of the mountains outside town. I tried to do a log update but the motel wireless system wasn't working. Going to pay our motel bill, all the credit and cash cards were 'declined' one by one, causing more than a little concern. Leaving my dearly beloved as surety, I went into town to try and get some money. At a bank ATM I gingerly inserted my card and......no problem ...

Out on the Marlborough Sounds

I am up early as usual, checking for emails. No news. Ah well, drinking wine before noon and eating fresh mussels should put me right! We go out on a Sunday morning to look for a photo shop that might be open for a passport photo. Sunday in a small town. Nothing is open but a gas station, and we are not surprised. We DO manage to get all the dust and grime washed off the car there. Alan circles the parking lot about 15 minutes before our allotted pickup time of 10 AM. We tell him ...

Nydia Track, Day 2 - Night 86

... the very building in which I am sleeping, went on from these humble beginnings to co-invent, with Geiger, the first radiation measuring device. He was also responsible for developing the original particle collider. Pickering was once head of the U.S. Jet Propulsion Lab and co-designed the first successful American satellite. All this from a town of less than 500 people...imagine even one genius coming from Nichols, WI or Thorpe, WA.
