      Building up the miles

... at the hostel. We'll be leaving probably around 10 and just going 5 miles to a shelter to recover from the longer miles we've been doing. Our trail legs are still coming in, so we're going to try to keep it around 10-12 miles for the next several days, maybe let Mooch and Seeker catch up. We'll be hitting North Carolina in a couple days and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park shortly after, so we have bigger mountains in ...

... We would have gone further but there was a section of trail right after Lance Creek that you can't camp in without a bear canister, which virtually no one on the trail has. The hike was pleasant even though it was overcast and misty. It kept the day cool while we hiked, although all the mists blocked the views. Lance Creek was crowded since everyone was stopping before the bear canister section, but Smokescreen, Co-ed, Mooch and I all ended up right next ...

It went up about 1,000 feet but it wasn't too terrible going up, but going down was a different story. The climb down into Neels Gap was full of slippery rocks that made me lose my footing a couple of times. I planned on hiking past Neels Gap, but there is ...

I said goodbye to my parents and Jessie on Monday and started the Approach Trail to the AT. The Approach Trail was by no means easy. There was a lot of slushy snow, and to make things even more fun we climbed about 2,000 feet in elevation. It was all worth it once I got to the top of Springer Mountain. It was awesome to see the first white blaze and take the first steps of this 2,200 mile hike. I've met some really cool people out here so far. Mathew is from Alabama ...

... here : willontheAT.tumblr.com Due to the fact that we are probably going to get a little bit of freezing rain tonight we are probably going to hike the approach trail to Springer Mountain tomorrow morning. The forest road to Springer is just a little too sketchy. It's a weird feeling planning half a year for something and it finally being here. I'm a little anxious, but mostly I'm excited to start this ...
