How many islands? There's hundred and thousands

After our disappointing trip to Pakse we headed to our final destination in Laos, 4000 Islands.

After a four bus journey we arrived in the pouring rain at 4000 islands.

Situated near the Cambodian border, 4000 islands is the name given to a group of islands whose number vary depending on the dry or rainy season. They sit in the middle of the widest point of the Mekong River. Three of these islands are inhabited and are said to be the jewel of Laos. Relaxation is the main ac...

4000 islands, paradise in the Mekong river

... she'd left off in her monologue, about something vaguely similar to what I had said. Apart from that she also had quite smelly breath. :-( In the end I just gave up and just uh-hummed a bit here and there and asked a few questions about countries I was interested in; but stopped expecting her to show the slightest interest in me. I was tired from getting up early anyway so it didn't matter. I'm glad it was only a 2 hour ride ...

Last week in Laos

... Swiss chewing gum and my bag remained empty.

We’ve both really loved Laos as it’s a place you go to experience the culture rather than see the sights. The pace is slower, not so commercial, the people are laid back and very friendly, it’s a lazy lifestyle and people take care of and have pride in their country. It’s less travelled, beautiful, clean and easy to love.<br ...

Four Thousand Islands...we counted them all...

... with a wide veranda built out over the river. I ate chicken “laap,” a Laos specialty which consists of finely chopped chicken marinated in mint, garlic and other spices. It is always served with sticky rice and eaten with your hands (no utensils). It was delicious.

The next day, we rented bikes and pedaled around the island. We encountered quaint little houses on stilts, water buffalo wallowing in ...

Bolaven Plateau

So we hired a motorbike on Saturday and set out to explore the Plateau and its waterfalls. Not too much went wrong considering the ****** state of our bike. We snapped a throttle cable 40kms out of town and had to make our way to the nearest bike repair shop. The guys fixed it for $2 within half an hour. As soon as we were ready to head off the pillion foot peg fell off lol. We saw a couple of breathtaking ...

Pakse

Hi to everyone, today it has been a really long day. We got up at about 7.30 am and got ready to go to the bank to get travellers cheques in dollars as we have been told that araound the border between Cambodia and Laos is the best way to get by, and there are not so many banks around. Then we went for a nice breakfast, soup breakfast and then back to the hotel to check out and go to the bus station to get ourselves a ...

Savanakhet -- going south, getting even more relax

We took a bus at about 9 in the morning. Chiel's electric racket fell during the night, as i tried to switch the bathroom light next to the plug where Chiel's racket was being charged. Chiel was quite dissapointed, but i was on a mission to buy another one. It was not an easy thing specially because outside the big cities, English is not widely spoken. But i must say that most people try to understand or help you. During the bus ride chiel asked me to throw the racket ...

Parc surnaturel

Suédois, ou Norvégien... du Nord donc. Il s'occupe d'excursions pour handicapes. Surtout. Donc on a pas hesite, on est rentres et on lui a demande la totale. 16 heures de 4x4 dans le région. Réveil a l'aube, malheureusement. Et hop, une grande ballade dans la région, direction le Laos et le parc national qui le jouxte. Demain, direction Surin et la fete des elephants!

Tedious Pakse

We thought this might be a sweet little place to wander round before heading further south but it really wasn't. Pakse is tiny, ugly and the best thing about it is the really cheap indian food. We stayed in a new hotel, so new the wrappers were still on the sofas in the lobby and it smelled of paint. We were excited, it was a lot nicer than some of the places we'd stayed and not too expensive but Jenny, the girl we made friends ...

4,000 Islands in the green warm Mekong River

... In our 8 days on the island, we made a few best friends. The two 20 year old girls that worked there took me to a religious ceremony, dressed me up in traditional Laos clothes, made Matt and I an offering basket (to give to the monks for good karma- which was returned to me when i was given a travel scrabble game), and helped us through a new moon-new year ceremony with all the locals and the monks.. we were the only farangs. It was so funny, we kept screwing up and all ...
