... Islands are now forested with no inhabitants except for 1, but come with a rich history of survivalists who tried to live thru the grueling 4-5 winter months. Several islands have sandy beaches at 250-500' high where the water level once was millions of years ago. The colorful caves make us wonder about their past. We had a nice drive on Sunday to Bayfield, WI, The drive reminded us of some of the roads in Alaska. Bayfield is a tourist town with a population of less than 500, located on Lake Superior the largest of the Great Lakes with over 37,000 square miles. Also located here is the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, which consists of 21 islands off the coast of the Bayfield Peninsula.
