You just can't beat coming home to your own cottage after a long day hiking in the hills. Sitting on your private deck, sipping wine while you dinner sizzles on the grill. Did I mention the awesome shower?? Truly a pleasureable way to spend the week and the hosts were as welcoming as could be!

... we reached the other end, we were profoundly tired but deeply satisfied. We traipsed back up to the campsite and told some of the guys we met there last night about our trip. Ben walked up to the bar on the edge of town to catch a bit of the cricket world cup final, expecting the venue to be packed. In fact, there were only six other punters there when he arrived, although the place began to fill out a bit over the next hour or so. The poor locals had a tough time ahead. While Ben ...

... guilty voice in the back of my mind this whole time saying "Yeah this is really gorgeous and beautiful, but I don’t know if it’s really that much better than a northern Michigan summer!" Sure we don’t have seals Up North, but is Cathedral Cove or Abel Tasman national park really that much more beautiful that the sand bowl or Empire beach at sunset on a clear evening? It’s really hard to say! Or is it the exotic factor that makes it seemingly ...

... we already had been greeted with cloud and light misty rain as we made our way up the lake in the boat. With our wet weather gear already deployed, after alighting at Glade Wharf we made the short walk on a well formed track to our first night's accommodation at Glade House, the official start of the Milford Track.

We had shared the boat ride with the independent walkers who today consisted largely of a school group of excited kids out ...

... bar had Spy Valley wine and we did get some sleep in our room. The engines started at 6.15am and breakfast was at 7am so early start....... Left the boat at 10am for the coach/boat journey back. In the middle of the fiord's we had some time of reflection at about 8am when it was all completely silent as the engines were switched off and everyone switched off to just hear the noises of nature! We saw more Dolphins before we got back. An unforgettable experience. ...

... a word they said") had just signed in before us but we saw no-one else on the site so we didn't know where they were being held captive. We obviously survived the night and set out on our trip. The first part was an hours catamaran ride across Lake Manapouri to tie up alongside a massive hydro-electric plant. This had been completed in 1971 and in order to bring all the materials and men to the site a road ...
