You just can't beat coming home to your own cottage after a long day hiking in the hills. Sitting on your private deck, sipping wine while you dinner sizzles on the grill. Did I mention the awesome shower?? Truly a pleasureable way to spend the week and the hosts were as welcoming as could be!

The most popular town for travellers, famous for its extreme sports, fergburgers, and nights out, we were so excited to get there we didn't stop once on the way here, even though we passed many wineries and even a cheesery! After finding the cheapest campsite around, we strolled into town to find our TI and plan out next few days... 50 minutes later we were on a coach headed to the Nevis Bungy Jump (134m high and the 3rd highest bungy jump in the ...

... since my first visit in 1974. Lovely views down the Sound. Walked out on Sandfly Point, well named for a view of waterfalls in the sound at low tide. (Thank goodness for Bushmans repellent.)
Today, we drove down from Manapouri on a rainy and cool day, 9-11 degrees mostly. Along our drives, we have now seen the following animals: cattle - black and white and brown, sheep - white and black, deer, ...

... We then moved east over the saddle to the pass, 1154 meters, and then down to the Mackinnon Pass day shelters, where several naughty Keas were trying to prize off the roof and pose for us! After 1 1/2 hours on the saddle we thought we better start the long descent (1000 meters) to the valley below! We took it steadily, we were overtaken by quite a few of the guided walkers (they stay in hotel accommodation and tend to carry much smaller packs and pay huge amounts for ...

... with cheese, tomato, and spinach. Now that’s fine hut dining!

After filling the dining room of the hut with the smell of bacon and our bellies with the resulting deliciousness, we grabbed day packs and walked to the summit of Mt. Luxmore. Unfortunately the cloud didn’t break quite soon enough for us to get some good views, but it was still a lovely walk in the fog! Then we turned ...

... for the 'Lord of the Rings' tour. We were a few minutes early and waited inside the booking office where we were met by a very jolly Karen, our tour guide. She promptly collect us and another couple and 'took' us to a rather battered looking Land Rover. Pat and David sat in the very back. We headed off to another pick up point where we collected a German couple. As it happens some of our companions had some interesting stories to tell which tied into the tour. Off we set ...
