        ... were once known as the Dangerous Islands. They are a vast group of sometimes huge Atolls that have invisible reefs and fast swirling currents surrounding them. Rangiroa is over 42nms long and the lagoon is a small ocean in itself covering some 1640 kilometres! It has its own shipping channels and much of the lagoon has not been surveyed.         ... to a reef in the front of the island where there was still a chance of seeing some of the magnificent creatures that live in the area. Sadly it was not to be, whilst the sea was clear and lovely and we had a few black tip reef sharks circling around us, the giant mantas, dolphins and hammerheads all kept their distance.         ... there was a taxi, but taxies were hard to find. So Bob and I walked. It was about a mile, but because of the heat, it was tough, especially Bob had to carry the bag. We thought about going back to the ship to drop off the stuff and then come back, but decided against it. The walk to the resort actually could be fun, if it were not so hot. The road was open ocean side of the atoll and it was quite beautiful.
