... whichever country was in control at that time. He wanted to learn English so he ran away. Once Cambodia was back in control he came back & studied English, but they thought he was a spy and he was arrested & interrogated 3 times. There was also a problem with slavery, starvation & illness. He lost both his parents & one brother to starvation & illness. At all of our stops today there were beggars. Most of them had lost one or ...
Sihanoukville, Cambodia kiberkid... finally made it out to the street and decided to walk but there were no sidewalks. A tuk tuk driver (It’s a 3-wheeled motorcycle with seats attached at the back.) came along so we hired him to take us to the beaches.
Even though the town was very third world, once we got outside of city center, it was beautiful and so much cooler. The people we saw were very, very poor.
... downing a few Angkor or Anchor beers :-)
There are lots of people constantly trying to sell you stuff like sunglases, bracelets, massage, pedicures, manicures and fruit. The women also offer threading on your legs and armpits (they use cotton to pull out your hair, instead of waxing or shaving) and it gets really annoying as they just come up and touch your legs and start to remove any hair. Try before you ...
Hi once again,
Our travel update - yesterday (Friday) morning we caught a local bus to take us to the Vietnam / Cambodia border crossing at Ha Tien. Local buses left hourly so no problem here - obviously a popular route. However, the drop off point turned out to be not in a town but at a service station in the middle of nowhere. We were met by two locals on small motor bikes and told that the only way to the next town was by motor bike!!!. The ...
unclee decided to go to the beach for a couple of days, get some sun, go for a swim, sip cocktails on the beach, that sort of thing. Unfortunately nature had other plans and decided to drop a massive set of rainclouds on us for about 5 solid days. While chilling out and relaxing rather than madly running around doing touristy things is kinda nice, I don't think a little sun would hurt either.
When we got to the bus station there appeared to be ...
... onto my wholesome toast and couldn't wait to go to the airport. That was until a swarthy Thai man propositioned me with an amazing offer, did I ( a woman, aged 30, who just got off a night bus and desperate for some western sanitation) want to go to a ping-pong show? Well, now you ask..... Of course I bloody didn't!! Not whilst there was toast to eat.
Spent most of the afternoon in the immaculate Bangkok airport (can't even pronounce it so don ...
We stayed in Seanoukville on the Cambodian coast in a hostel called the Monkey Republic (which had awesome breakfasts), overall we found the centre and the beaches to be quite touristy so after a day at the beach we decided to rent peds for the day and go off exploring to some of the waterfalls out of town; this was probably one of the funnest days that we had, buzzing around the countryside! None of us had really ridden peds ...
Sihanoukville, Cambodia cavalierxHello again! After the tiring days of motorbike riding we decided the best thing was to meet up with our Vang Vieng tubing friends in the sleepy backwaters of Four Thousand Islands on the border with Cambodia. Amy and Beth have headed to Vietnam and Bart has gone home, sadly, but we were still seven strong as Ruth's friend Maria has flown out to join us. As the name suggests Four Thousand Islands is a group of four thousand islands but of these only a few are habitable and we ...
Sihanoukville, Cambodia dantheeducator... ed my toe next to my big toe. Pretty sure I broke it and it was ridiculously painful. Couldn't put much pressure on it, and it went swollen and bright purple the following day [the only thing that did go swollen and purple - wahhheeeeyyy!!!]. Still hurts now (in Kratie/Krah-ché).
So the best thing I decided to do was to drink my way through it. It was the first night of Cambodian New Year and we hit a few bars along the beach and drunk a lot of Angkor (national beer) and ...
... Once one has left another beggar will miraculously appear, a never ending stream. So be prepared for this. Also there are quite a few hawkers selling their goods and they can be a nuisance as well
There are some nice beach shack cafes that serve some good food and has quite a relaxed atmosphere. What I liked was the fact that you could sit on the a beach cushion and the café owner would not hassle you to buy drinks At night there are many barbecues, I had barracuda which ...
