    ... caves.

    After the cave visit we head west. We are going to ride over to the Italian border and the Soca Valley, looking for accommodation as we go.

    We soon find it in the little village of Ciginj near Tolmin. The Blue House is a lovely pension run by Valentin. We are soon made comfortable and after supper at the pizza house across the road we turn in after a tiring but interesting day.

    ... The winding road up to the fortress has 14 separate defensive gates with drawbridges across deep canyons, portcullises and artfully constructed firing angles covering every possible approach. Nobody was getting in here.

    ... was very different to what we did when in France with Venice being the obvious highlight but Verona and Bologna also being good. The cheaper prices of campsites after Pisa certainly helped as we weren't feeling ripped off and the lakes we stayed at were also very cool. We have now had our time on the hot southern European leg of our trip and are heading into mountainous Austria so it should be quite a change and there's only one way to find ...

    ... houses are adorned with flowers. It is very green and lots of hills and mountains.
    Our first stop was Skojcan caves.
    We just missed the 10am tour by about 2 minutes thanks partly to our GPS and had to wait till 11am. The cave was amazing- not for the decorations which were pretty but for the vastness of the chambers. The final chamber was 162 metres in height.     As we have kayaking booked for the afternoon we just bumbled around town

    We turned up and filled in the required forms at the kayaking place. I used that term loosely as Gus can't swim and hence although he filled the form in he didn't sign the waiver.
