Today we picked up a rental car and headed for the mountains! As with many rentals, we got something bigger than we reserved because that was what they had...it's not too big though, and so far it has treated us well. Grant is getting back into the hang of driving a stick shift and Bonnie is navigating us through the mountain roads. The scenery today was just beautiful. So much green! We saw tons of paragliders and a few hang gliders ...

The boat trip will take us around the islands surrounding Venice, as well as seeing Venice itself and gaining some insight (in four different languages) from the guide. First stop is Murano, where we see a glass-blowing demonstration. We see a flower made and then another man takes over and proceeds to pick seemingly randomly at the molten glass. The rush of crystal blue water pools up in limestone bunkers, while some salmon take refuge in them from the currents push. I dip my toes ...

Although the people of Friuli are fairly introverted, they are proud of the produce from their land - we have discovered that the prosciutto is second to none and the wine is pretty good too (at 4 Euros a bottle). Today, we discovered the main towns in the area. Udine, the largest town, has a tumultuous history. Its castle ...

... and forests. The medieval-era Bled Castle stands above the lake on the north shore. The Zaka Valley lies at the west end of the lake.

We took in the panoramic view from Bled's hilltop castle. Walked lake for 2 hours to take photos. Ate HUGE chicken Kabob and shared local cake.

    After lunch we had a scenically-winding, mountain-pass drive ...
