We took a water taxi, a Vaporetto, up the grand canal (front seats in the open air, just like going on a cruise up the Sydney harbour - but a bit more glamorous!), watching the massive cruise ships crawling up the Giudecca Canal with tug boats pushing them up.     Only got maybe 5 or 6 hours of sleep so 6am was not too pleasant a time to rise. Wasn't in much of a rush to get down to breakfast considering they haven't been anything extraordinary in the past and this place wasn't exactly the Ritz.     ... so we did some shopping of course. Scarves! In all the colors! All the patterns! Needless to say everyone left with at least one scarf. I also learned that Venetian glass is a thing. It is way to gaudy even for me, but hey to each his own right? Tchotckes of every conceivable critter were made out of this glass, but the very best was the 2 foot glass unicorn.
