I went to Rome for Turkey Day. Italians don't know about Thanksgiving, but the Xmas decorations sprung out on Friday, right on time. Santa Claus and Baroque architecture, childish to ancient, profane to sanctimonious. In Rome, a city where nothing is new, the opposites don’t attract, they just tolerate each other in a stand-off. Lingerie ads on the churches.
Rome is the eternal city, 2765 years old, according to the ...
Last night I dreamed of onward travels. Anxious dreams. Today is the day I've been dreading since the beginning. Today I go to Rome. I have to obtain visas for Ethiopia and Sudan. I hope it will be quick, and I hope it will be painless, but I have visions of money flying from my pockets as I wait for the slow gears of third world bureaucracy to slowly crank out my paperwork. "Just give yourself lots of time" Shanny, the tour manager had advised. Time I have, money ...
Rome, Lazio, Italy jmckerricher... it impossible to understand (to non Italian speakers such as ourselves at least) and we were standing amongst large crowds we decided to head off and sample some more treats of Rome. We spent the rest of the day walking the streets of the city from one monument to the next and although I had seen most of them a few days previously I was happy to see them again and share the experience with two lovely people. We got back to the camping approximately 10 hours after ...
Prima Porta, Latium, Italy sh3251... blocks from the famous Trevi Fountain, so we took advantage of the wait time to head down and check it out. We got around the corner and just liek with the Sistine, we were not prepared for the Trevi. This thing was HUGE! And there were all sorts of people waiting to throw their coins in the fountain. We finally worked our way to the front and I got my chance. It was exciting! I hope that means that I DO get to come back to Rome ...
Vatican City, Lazio, Vatican City lunababy... it was down to business. Before he would allow us to buy wines he insisted that he open a bottle of rose' (we didn't argue too much), the one wine of his we hadn't tasted. So at 10.00 a.m. we were sipping a very nice rose. By 11.00 we were out, but not before we/he presented the orchids to his wife , who was duly impressed. He joked that the plant was his idea, pointing to himself energetically (that's the only way he knows) and patting ...
Madonna della stella, Italy umbriagang... our new found Bostonian friends, John and Amy, and entered the museaìum at the peculiar time of noon. It worked perfect and we walked right in. There are so many things to see in the museum, we did not know where to start. We ended up starting at the perfect spot to get a full tour. The first room included many more busts of great emperors. It is hard for me to get over these. We figured it would be best to follow the path that lead to the Sistine chapel. It proved to be a good ...

Chianti, Italy margitdde... the building and met up with two men (who I think was very gay). They were fabulous and were visiting Italy for a friends wedding. They have been staying in a Villa along the coast, then came over to Rome because they had VIP tickets through a friend, yada yada they were rich yada yada. They joined us because we were going to the metro and they needed help finding it. We walked back down the hill, which was alot easier than going up, and reached the metro...only to find out that ...
Rome, Italy bmachus... great capital of the Roman empire and you will come to find that while archeologists are excavating unknown historical artifacts dedicated to various Roman Deities, hipsters and fashion mavens are also digging up a sizeable collection of divine new restaurants, bars and shopping boutiques all over the city. We began our tour of Rome after a sweet lunch at the Prati Street market as Nina and I headed South to initiate some contact with ancient Roman ...
Roma, Italy jazzkat6... Simon & Garfunkel concert in front of the Colosseum... well we didn't fully miss it - we heard it but we were nowhere near close enough to see the stage :-) Sorrento and Capri were very touristy and very expensive (1 EURO for a peach??)... not authentic Italy and not easy on the budget. But the natural beauty made up for it. We actually bypassed the 10 EURO beating and jumped in the Mediterranean and SWAM ...
