Matsumoto castle is not very big. It was constructed between 1592 and 1614. It has 5 stories but from the outside, it looks af though there is only 4. There is a hidden level inside where gunpowder and other armaments were stored. The steps up were quite steep and high. If you were tall, it was OK but if you had short legs, it was a bit of a stretch. Coming down was worse. It was far easier ...

The hotel had organised a morning walk at 6.30am. We were driven to near Kurobe River to see the sunrise at the gorge. There were monkeys playing and sitting on the road. Some didn't care that a car/bus was coming along and continued grooming. The Kurobe Gorge is the largest V-shaped gorge in Japan.

... that Owen would make this hotel his usual one in the area as he normally stays at another hotel. The head chef came out as well. They both received their plaudits.

We were offered an early morning tour of the area at 6.30am tomorrow. Most of us said that we would go, so it would be an early start. The tour would only take an hour so we would have to have breakfast on our return and to check out at 8.30am the next day.

... we were early and the rooms weren't ready, we opted to take the small Kurobe Gorge Railway train up to the gorge. Five didn't go. We had left John and Joan back at the previous train stop as they are an older couple and did not want to stay in a ryokan. There were 16 of us going and Owen was going to stay behind.
