5 days trip in hakuba 2009

first day; we had to catch a bus from shinjuku to hakuba which took us 4.5 hrs to get there. when we arrived at hakuba we've arranged a pick up from the hotel that we will be staying for the next 5 days. (hotel phoenix wing) we were greeted by a nice young guy at the happo bus information centre from the hotel. we were surprised that the guy who greeted us is also from australia as well. anyway, we've booked a room for 2 adult for 4 nights without ...

Day Trip to post town

... plan was to enjoy Tsumago and then walk 2-3 hours to Magome, but around lunchtime it started pouring down rain with no sign of letting up, so we only got to visit Tsumago. The main street had a variety of inns, shrines, houses, and of course souvenir shops. Next time we come to Japan, we will do the walk with our bells on (bc of bears!)

Magome and Tsumago: Tourism on the Edo Highway

... is despite perfect weather. Tsumago is better than Magome for me; the entire town has the feel of a museum (but with deliciously overpriced chestnut ice cream) and I had a blast just strolling through the crowds. Plus I had the knowledge that I could hike right out of the chaos whenever I wanted to...unlike relying on the bus which comes every 90 minutes. Incidentally some of the hiking paths take you through real towns that have old style architecture with ...

We've found a kind of paradise

... Mount Fuji. Imagine living at the foot of one of Mother Nature's greatest creations! I would try to describe the mountain for you, but, no words or even pictures can capture what it is like to feast your eyes on this majestic sight. I hope to watch the sun rise over it from the on-sen (hot spring) located on the roof of the building! I tried to give a sense of Mount Fuji to a friend in an e-mail. I ended up writing some thing like "just simply ...

Hakuba: heart of the Japanese Alps

... Hakuba. It was awesome to see these guys and make some turns with them again. It's also great to be with someone who knows a place as you get to see so much more. After ringing Scott just after we got in and giving him close to no idea where we were staying (would have been good to get my bearings a little BEFORE ringing him... good one Fiona), we discovered we were almost neighbours, just five minutes down the road. How fortuitous! ;) Scott ...

Snowboarding and onsens in Nozawa Onsen

... One of the runs was 5.9 Kms long, making for a seemingly endless ride down the mountain. It was one of our favorite runs. The top of the mountain had great views of the surrounding Japanese Alps and the village below. We stayed at a place called Lodge Nagano. It was a fantastic lodge run by an Australian guy who had been living his last 18 winters in Japan. I want his job! The lodge had super friendly staff who cooked you breakfast each ...

Kiso Valley, Old Nakasendo Way, Cycling trip

July 30 to August 5, 2008. Solo cycle trip through the Kiso river valley in rural, mountainous Nagano prefecture, Japan. I also hiked part of the old Nakasendo Way, a stone path created for walkers in Edo era, so they could get through ...

Magome & Tsumago Post Towns

... and old tea houses, but it may be better to walk from Magome to Tsumago, not the opposite way. If you take the direction, the first 2 km should be hard, because of the uphill of Magometoge Mountain Path, but after that, you can enjoy a lot of downhills. It is an idea to walk down the route up to Nagiso Railway Station, if you have to wait for a bus, where you can visit the largest woden suspension bridge of Japan, Momosuke Bridge, which was built by Fukuzawa Momosuke, the king of ...
