... remember the Cesky Krumlov photos. When we were her 20 years ago, NO ONE around the square spoke ONE word of English. Now it's a real tourist destination.

Castle tour tomorrow and graphite mine tour on Friday. Rain expected both days for both days.

... for books in German, Latin, Spanish, Italian, and French. A case held books dating back to the 1600's. The Chapter Huose was a beautiful room with fabulous acoustics, now used for concerts and weddings. The cloisters were especially lovely, with renaissance decoration. And then there was the church. Two of the reasons we decided to stay in Ceske Budejovice, (also known as Budweis) were because 1) it was close to Cesky Krumlov but not as touristy, and 2) it is the home of the original Budweiser beer called Budvar. In Canada the USA, this beer is called Czechvar, not Budweiser. The American Budweiser beer company is separate from the Czech city of Budweis it is named after. ... car to see it clamped, along with all the other cars in the area. our parking was still paid for another 30minutes, and there were no signs anywhere saying it was no parking. The police must have been doing the rounds on a clamping mission, and were about to drive back around the square to get the newcomers parked around us. rachel ran over and stood in front of their car like a mad woman screaming at them to stop. neither of the officers spoke english (seriously!?) ...

... made of it. The tour was mostly of the apartments of the families that had lived in the castle, so not too much about the history of the town, but it was still interesting.

We cooked in the hostel in the evening, gnocchi with spicy sausage and what we had thought was a tomato sauce but turned out to be a kind of sweetish paprika sauce, which just about worked, but wasn't ideal. We'll have to get better at deciphering foreign jar labels :-)
