... clear the snow from my shoe and I got a bit bogged and off balance so landed in the snow. Where it is very soft, it was harder but most of the parts we walked were quite ok. Partway through we stopped for a hot drink and a biscuit. Our guide made a seat in the snow and gave us plastic sheets to sit on which kept a tiny bit of the chill out of the bottom. We wandered back around through the trees and out onto some white on white areas. The ...

Today is the day to venture up to the Japanese Alps to Myokokogan. Marina was lovely enough to drop us over to the train rather than us having to go all the way back down to Nagano and back up on the other line. The train had few other tourist looking mobs on it heading up to the ski resorts. It was a pretty journey up through the hills with the snow getting deeper and deeper. We ...

There were the slits in the walls to shoot arrows through as well as some side ramps where they could roll stones down onto anyone trying to climb up the walls. It was starting to get chilly as it does by ...

Well today I managed to tick another big ticket off my wildlife list. The Japanese Macaques or Snow Monkeys. Marina made us a delicious traditional breakfast of rice balls stuffed with seaweed and local plums plus a bowl of miso soup and some pickled vegetables and grasshopper. Yes you heard correct grasshopper! They are quite nice really in a exoskeletal kind of way. We had to get the Snow Monkey Express up to Yudanaka to then get a ...

... about one and a half hours and we were in Nagano. Our accommodation is just a few train stops past Nagano in Suzaka so we found the train for this line and headed on up on the snow monkey express train. Our guesthouse is soo cute, Guesthouse Kura, www.ghkura.com It is an old historic building and is in the traditional style with rice paper walls between rooms and tatami matting on the floor. Our beds are futon mattresses with thick luxurious bedding, electric blankets and ...
