... town, we got off and walked through the picturesque cedar avenue to the next town, Hakone-Machi. From here we got on the sightseeing boat to cros the lake (Ashino-Ko) - a pirate ship nonetheless. I kid you not! We also managed to not get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji all this time (the whole reason for coming this way) because of the poor visibility and low cloud. At the other side of the lake we caught the ...
Moto-hakone, Kanagawa, Japan jermdixon... about the "black eggs". Supposedly if you eat a black egg which had been cooked in the sulfur springs you will have 7 years added to your life span. So Jeremy and I said that sounded great. The eggs are put into little baskets and dropped into the sulfur springs to boil. Talk about stink - the springs were awful, and the eggs made it worse. Anyway, when they come out the shells are totally black ...
Hakone, Kanto, Japan ajnails... Fuji – any photo you have seen does not do it justice. It is amazingly huge.
The second ropeway went over a sulphide mine – they call it hell valley – and the rotten egg smell filled our noses. We bought a black egg, which is an egg cooked in the sulphide water which turns the egg black and gives it a slight smokey (dare we say "*****" smell). Although an acquired taste; local legend says that eating one will ...

Well we rose fairly early and finished packing our gear as we prepared to leave Tokyo. We bid farewell to the oh-so-friendly staff at the Sakura hostel in Asakusa. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can recommend the place to any traveller to Tokyo. It suited us heaps as it is laid back and friendly, they all spoke great English and were just the nicest and most helpful folk we could have imagined.
Now seasoned travellers in the Tokyo ...
Hakone, Kanto, Japan ania-maciek... 10:30am, having missed our bus and headed to the bus-ticket office. It was immediately clear that mayhem was ensuing because lots of people were in our same shoes and had missed or would be missing their buses because of the crowds. The line for tickets was maybe 30 ft long when we got there and had doubled within 15 minutes. A few buses came and left and then the bus company finally gave up on their nice orderly reservation system. When we heard “ ...
Fuji, Chubu, Japan unsoundmethods... views of the surrounding mountains and forest. We decided to take advantage of the nearby village onsen (a communal outdoor hot spring bath, found everywhere in Japan). Upon finding slippers and a yukata (traditional Japanese gown) in our wardrobe we followed the cue of the other guests and got dressed. After receiving some confusing directions from the guesthouse manager (who spoke limited English, and in retrospect, did seem to be laughing at us) we soon became lost, dressed ...

... tour the area and so would the horrible mobs of people! We left Chinatown to find that the other areas surrounding, especially Motomachi, was quite charming. Not satisfied with our Chinese lunch we stopped for a rest at a second story coffee shop where we got the "cake set" a small torte with tea for me and a torte with some frothy cappuccino for Chris for about $9 per person. From here we walked along a strip of ...
Tokyo, Japan jenfifiWe had breakfast at the hotel and were then picked up for our tour to Mt.Fuji. The first stop was at a service station on the way down to Mount Fuji to allow people to get a drink and stretch their legs. As it was such a clear day you could see the peak of Mt.Fuji from the service station.
A few minutes later we were on our way to the viewing area on Mt.Fuji. Due to snow we went to the second level from the bottom but it still had ...
