... Out of the mountains and about 30 minutes from Nagano. Maleny/Montville style town. Warm here, about 24 degrees - so we were a bit hot as we dressed for the mountains. While touristy, it is quiet and unhurried. It is chestnut season for this area so speciality shops with everything "chestnut" and cafes, beautiful craft stores, sake brewery (no thanks after last nights headache), galleries and museums. ... people know each other. There's something cleansing (no pun intended) about sitting at a stool in a stall with a low mounted water tap and a plastic pan that you fill with water and drench yourself. I find it quite refreshing and relaxing and many Japanese dream of retiring in a town or home with an onsen facility.

I've not plotted a route for tomorrow yet. Needless to say, judging by the mountains in all the photos, there will be climbing ...

Matsumoto castle

Walked to Matsumoto castle, an amazing old wooden castle, shoes off, and walked up the 6 levels. Some stairs were very steep, almost vertical. Beautiful manicured gardens. We had ice creams under the vine covered pergola, and then went to the Matsumoto city museum, small but interesting. All tired and hungry went to ...
