... do so for just over 20 km to the pass. My legs felt better today; I felt like I had more power and was climbing with more speed than yesterday but the niggly knee problem remained.

Although I started the climb in bright sunshine, as I rode higher, clouds seemed to roll in to make for foggy conditions and the temperature dropped. The higher I went, the thicker the fog. Any thought of spectacular views had basically disappeared as I could see no vistas at all. ...

... for a quite nice hotel. However, this town has great atmosphere, the mountain air is refreshing and the surroundings are gorgeous.

Tomorrow is the climb up to Mt. Shirane, the site of a caldera lake with lots of elevation gain as well. I'm hoping my legs will feel better. However, having said that, the extra 20 pounds or so in gear and clothes that I'm carrying could be a major factor.

... need to add cold water to make them bearable but it takes too long to cool them down so for the most part it was just jump in and out. The ryokan provides you with a yukata (a type of kimono) and tabi (wooden sandles) to wear about the town as you hop from onsen to onsen. I didn't feel too silly because everyone was wearing this. The other thing about onsen is that you very quickly get quite blasé about public nudity. You walk into the change room and there are 5 or 6 naked ...

After our onsen we returned to our room, got dressed and then went down to the foyer where wifi was available, to catch up on our blog and emails. We had a drink as well. Beer was the better choice.
