... farming town of Baernzell. Sampled the local schnapps (called Bayernwurz), and enjoyed the local rye bread fresh from the 300 year old brick oven. After indulging in local specialities, we took a horse drawn carriage ride through the beautiful farmland, which was very peaceful.

The main, and really only reason for our visit to Pilsen (or Plzen) was … you guessed it …. for beer!!! Apart from the beer, Pilsen has a nice old town, and is the European Capital of Culture for 2015. It is also on the Lonely Planet’s top 10 places to visit in Europe for 2014, so it has to
have something going for it!!!

There is a nice main square (Republic Square) which has the obligatory big old church, ...

41 kms AM - Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum". PM - The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving ...

... the hotelrestaurant to have some dinner. It was simple but nicely prepared. We had a a tomato creme soup and a Wiener Schnitzel for me, trout and veal for Erwin.
Back in our room we watched Germany struggle with Ghana and went to bed. Tomorrow is going to be another long day of driving and we should be able to make it to the campground in the afternoon.
